ITT - talk about what bands you saw this past year, share cool experiences you had, rate the shows you saw, etc. etc.

This year I saw Bad Religion, NMH, Animal Collective, The Replacements, Brand New, Against Me!, The Dismemberment Plan, The Bronx, Peter Hook, Bob Mould, and My Bloody Valentine. My favorite by far was the Replacements, and my least favorite was Brand New, but they were still pretty good.

how about you guys?

I've seen way more shows than I can count this year, but I think my top 3 is probably Portugal. the Man, Anamanaguchi and The Menzingers.

Portugal still knows how to fucking JAM. I love their new material but I was afraid that it wouldn't translate well to a live show, but they ended the first part of their set with a 10 minute jam rendition of Purple, Yellow, Red and Blue with some ridiculous hooks and even the beginning of Drunkship of Lanterns by Mars Volta just for the hell of it. Their light/video show was so on point too and I would gay marry John Gourley in a heartbeat.

Anamanaguchi was just a night of drunk, stupid fun with good friends. I crowd surfed like hella and multiple people hung from the rafters and it was just all around a great time

The Menzingers are the best punk band I've ever seen live. The first time I saw them was when they were opening for Hot Water Music and I could tell they were trying their best to put on a good show but nobody in the crowd fucking cared. I saw them at Stay Sweet later in the year though and it was amazing. The crowd was bonkers, I got thrown up in the air and backflipped for no goddamn reason, and the setlist was wall to wall great

I saw Neutral Milk Hotel too, and I don't know what I was expecting to feel but 'disappointment' wasn't it. Maybe my NMH days are just too far behind me but it didn't resonate with me the way I assumed it would when I bought my ticket like 6 months in advance

They were really good both times. Sill played the songs from the record even with out drums. At the wesleyan show there was a point where it became loud blaring high frequencies and their was a qt red there who had her eyes closed and ears covered staring at the ground looking very upset. should have talked to her she was qt. but she was obviously there because of friends or something.

anyway it seems like they are still on good terms with there drummer, (promoting his touring on their FB page) but idk.

Purity Ring was quality, really great stage setup with a ton of hanging paper lamps that lit up in different colors, weird electric xylophone thing, giant drum/gong, the works. They defo deliver their studio sound in concert, but I'm pretty sure 3/4 of it was prerecorded or preprogrammed

Anco was fuckin great. second time I've seen them play, and after they postponed the show for like 6 months I was so fuckin hype — the band did not disappoint. Played mostly stuff from CHz/MPP, wish they had gone back a little farther like they did at p4k chicago. The crowd was bullshit, though, tons of fucking kids standing around talking and not giving a shit. That's sort of standard for that venue tho

I guess that's about it, except for basement shows w/ friends which were all exceptionally dope

this years been gr8 for me w/ shows

1st saw high on fire, lo pan and goatwhore supporting bands. Mostly everyone there was going for goat whore and cleared out before high on fire and the floor was pretty empty which was really lame. Still gr8 music just wish had a better crowd

then saw Cosmonauts with burnt ones, tomorrows tulips, and the abigails. Was a small show, lots of cuties, loved all the bands, crowd was fukin insane and there were many marijuanas. one of the best shows ive been too.

then saw Youth Lagoon and Pure X. Hadnt heard pure x before but fell in love w/ them. lotta cuties cus cuties love that owl city youth lagoon weird baby voice. After the show me and my friend got invited backstage and we smoked with pure X

last show i saw was animal collective and was the best show ever. amazing crowd, i got early so i got to stay in the front of the venue cus they bar late comers from goin up at this particular venus. went in high as fvck came out higher because literally everyone at that show was lighting up and were very generous w/ it. During deradoorians set i made sure i didnt move back due to shifting crowd and some guy complained about it because he was in front of me but ended up behind me but i was like what the heck is this about. at one point i just started doing a metal stance headbang and i got no clue why but i did. anco ended the show w/ an amazing version of purple bottle that was such a great closure to the show. i wanted to buy one of the sick tie-die shirts they had but they charged 25 bucks which is 5 dollars than normal and i had only 24 because i gave a dollar to a line-beggar while waiting

Talmud Beach (great live music + as I said, backed Johnston great. really glad I was quick enough to grab a cassette recording of the gig)
Eevil Stƶƶ + DJ Kridlokk + Koksukoo, two times (great)
hanggai (nice! should get an album of theirs)
Jambinai (also need to get their album...)
Ameba (fuck yes my favorite rapper)
Tuuttimƶrkƶ (he has nice charisma)
Musta Barbaari (eh, gotta respect a dude who does a gig and only performs one song - the only one he has done...)
Kube + MƤkki (deeecent, but not really my favorites)
Solonen & Kosola (uh, ok, but not really my kind of rap)
Stepa & Are (great!)
Paperi T & Khid (awesome, they really have fun on their gigs and you can feel it)
Joose Keskitalo & Kolmas Maailmanpalo (it was the last gig of the band...really glad I got to experience it. they're one of my favorites)
Pietari & Kohtalon Kauppiaat (hm, rapper doing blues-y thing, interesting for sure)

think those were all.

DJ Polarsoul
Stepa & Are for the second time
Loost Koos
Oukkidouppi
Moilubi

Two starter bands, can't remember one, the other was a very axesome experimental band with a shitload of good ideas.

I majorly blew it on shows this year.

Went to FYF and saw a bunch of stuff.
-The Locust was my kind of shit, totally on point.
-Dan Deacon was fucking awesome, I never see that sort of shit.
-YYY was nice nostalgia for me who went to college during Fever to Tell era when the were actually respected but never actually saw them play. I was blown away by KO's enthusiasm but so much of their recent material is mediocre and it comes across live. Still, I like that song "Despair" and heard it for the first time at this show, and it was nice to have her sing it to me.
-Breeders, Baroness, and Yo La Tengo mediocre. Thee Oh Sees a bit better but still disappointing.
-Melvins were very very special. Just top notch sludge. One of my favorite bands for like a decade and I've managed to never see them until at this fest. Fortunately they were on the small stage so the sound was actually legit.
-MBV was legendary. The whole world changed colors whenever the would start a new song. Best a band has ever sounded at a giant outdoor fest

The best band I saw this year was Earthless, anybody who ever has the chance to see Earthless live and misses it is a fucking dunce.

I almost got to see SubRosa but they got their equipment stolen on their way to play the show and had to cancel. I went anyway and caught these dudes Yidhra who I'd never heard of, they were legit as fuck super lunkheaded stoner rock and had a theramin which is always fun. Samothrace was this sort of post funeral doom thing and their drummer had his cymbals like, really really high, he had to stretch out to hit them, it was weird, they were pretty awesome though.

Next up is Church of Misery.

Shit dude yeah; shows I can remember going to this year.

>Enter Shikari
Exactly what you'd expect, don't listen to them much anymore but the live shows are always good fun energy. 7/10
>Desaparecidos
Saw them with "We Are The Physics" as support in Glasgow, one of the best gigs I've ever been to, tiny venue only thing lacking was energy in the room 8/10
>Nai Harvest/Crash of Rhinos (In Support of Braid)
I was one of about 4 people there to see Nai Harvest really good set, I want to see them as a headliner as soon as possible; Crash of Rhinos had a shocker, broken strings everywhere and one of their guitars went totally to shit but I still enjoyed it if only for "Speed of Ocean Greyhounds". Braid were absolutely balls, Frame and Canvas was just a bit boring, left before the end. Because they were the supports noone else was really going for it so I felt a bit out of place 7/10
>Tigers Jaw
Saw them on the breakup EU tour with only two of the actual members and touring musicians. Might be my favourite gig of all time, room had fantastic energy and the band were obviously blown away at how much people loved them. 9/10
>The Wonder Years
Sat through 2 shitty supports and one kinda alright one (Real Friends) with a load of pop punk kids only to have my heart shit out on my during song three and have to sit out for a while, during which time I just got annoyed by how fake The Wonder Years were on stage despite sounding quite genuine in studio (they had obviously planned preambles for most songs), the setlist they played for us was two songs shorter than most other places and there was no Hoodie Weather either. Like a solid 6/10
>Sigur Ros
Standing at the Usher Hall about 3 days ago - fucking brilliant, really good light show, support from "I Break Horses" was really cool, doomy/synthy stuff (kinda like Crystal Castles on the closing songs on II/III). 9/10

Going to see GY!BE tonight, should be fantastic.

I saw like a hundred bands this year so I'll just mention the most noteworthy;

Testament, 8/10, tight playing and amazing interaction with the public, the crowd was also great.

Vektor, 10/10, probably the single greatest musical act I have witnessed live, everyone was in shock and awe, they seemed pretty happy of the reception as this was their European debut.

Down, now that was awesome, Phil's voice wasn't as good as in the 90's but the band gave their all, Phil had fun with a love doll someone threw him and the crowd was in a stage between completely stoned because of all the smokers and excited as hell.

I saw QotSA a few days ago, for the second time. It was a decent gig. They were perfect in terms of musicianship and vocals, mixing was really good too.

Crowd was alright. Plenty of light moshing which was rad, I like when people get into it and start throwing themselves against one another or bumping around. There were plenty of people with only a casual interest in the band though - everyone lost their shit to No One Knows which is the typical Queens mainstream single (not a bad song, it's just like Smells Like Teen Spirit is to Nirvana, if you catch my drift), but hardly anyone was grooving with me to Misfit Love, or Monsters in the Parasol. They ended on A Song for the Dead with that cool live arrangement they do, and Sick Sick Sick was awesome live. Nice visuals too, but I think Queens are slightly better in a more intimate venue than an arena.

Welp. I live in Florida, so no one ever comes here.

Wanted to see Youth Lagoon, never got around to it and didn't want to go by myself. Wanted to see Mount Kimbie, but once again didn't want to go alone and didn't really have any cash to spend. Wanted to see Starfucker, but I was busy.

Did end up going to see Frightened Rabbit with my brother. They put on a pretty good show but I'm not a huge fan of them, they're not really all that special in my opinion.

Kinda realized since then I'm rarely going to have someone to go with, so if I wanna go just go and enjoy the concert by myself.
