Why do you guys hate dad rock?

>> No.41563358

Because people who ask that question only enjoy shitty dadrock, so we decided to claim to hate all dadrock.

>> No.41563363

I would argue that current /mu/ is basically a reaction against dadrock or also indie rock. Really its about liking hip hop and music like that, and disliking the traditional white establishment of indie and alt-rock.

Because I love my dad but he listens to bad music

I've actually developed my dad rock collection quite extensively. I've heard someone on here refer to music enthusiasts as either lakes (broad tastes, low level of involvement in specific genres) or wells (narrow taste, huge involvement) and I put myself in the latter group.

So.. I disagree.

classic rock has the worst fanbase of all time

>> No.41563503

And there's also "new" dad rock. I know some might find that surprising, but if you put this song on for your dad (assuming he liked the Beatles), he'd enjoy it.

C'mon admit it.

I think this is why /mu/ collectively mocks dadrock. Not really anything to do with the music itself being bad.

This. It's gotten to the point where discussing Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift is okay but discussing Fleet Foxes or Deerhunter gets you told to go back to Reddit.

Some people are still in that "rebelling against my parents" phase. But they'll grow out of it and realize that there is some excellent dadrock out there.

I don't know if it's dadrock that has the worst fanbase. Sure there are a lot that are dicks, but a lot of us just sit here and enjoy our music without shitting on others' music.

I love Prog. rock, but people that ask us why do we hate it are probably new and have bad taste in the genre.

You do realize that "dad rock" spans across potentially hundreds of subgenres and many many many bands, right? I hope you're being facetious.

I don't hate dadrock. I love shit like Motorhead, Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Anthrax, Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Skynyrd etc. Dadrock can be pretty fucking nice. I do have to be in the mood for some stuff though.

>> No.41563852

>>41563760
i dont really think most people refer to that when they use the term dadrock though
its just the ones that 14 year olds are likely to comment this type of shit >>41563473 on
like ac/dc and the beatles and guns n roses and whatever
you never see people use the term dadrock when discussing TVU or whatever other old bands are pretty much universally liked or acknowledged here

>> No.41563938

>>41563852

It's a term of derision that I've taken back. I think it's a good catchall of rock music.

I mean dad rock basically means rock your dad would listen to. This could be anything from The Beatles to Blue Cheer to Moody Blues, etc etc etc.

>> No.41564237

>>41563938
well as a term of derision its just for pretty much anything that would play on a typical "classic rock" radio station
and as a retaliation against youtube/reddit/whatever teenagers who spew baseless generalizations like "music was better back then" or "music doesnt have meaning now like it used to"
the amount of 11-18 year olds who genuinely believe these things without having listened to a single album from the artists they like or the ones they dont like is ridiculous
and i think a lot of people used to be like that and theyre more lashing out against their past selves than anything
but im just basing that part on myself i dont really know

>> No.41564304

>>41563720
To be sincere I don't think we can classify dadrock adequately.
It's just a term we use to piss-off 'born in the wrong generation' idiots.
See: King Crimson is generally liked here, but we don't call them dadrock.
But we call Floyd fans dadrockers, because they usually fit that mindset.
It's just a derogatory term, but that doesn't mean we hate the music.

I don't mean to offend you, but I think you haven't lurked enough. See some prog threads to see what I'm talking about.

>> No.41564336

>>41564237

The problem is that shitty people liking good music doesn't make good music shit. Just because some faggots on youtube like Queen and hate every other band doesn't make Queen bad, is what I mean to say.

Not liking a band expressly because people you dislike like it.. that's very childish.

>> No.41564398

>>41564336
Queen is a singles band.
Their music isn't that good, really.

>> No.41564408

>>41564304

I just love it all. I mean shit.. rock is the motherfucking shit. Prog rock, arena rock, new wave british metal, southern hard rock.. it's all fucking sweet. They're like pokemans.. I gotta have 'em all.

And I get that it's a negative term, but those bands that are "dad rock" aren't bad.

>> No.41564452

>>41564398

I'm not disagreeing, but it was just an example. Just because Billy "Wrong Generation" Bob likes band [x] doesn't make band [x] bad, that's my thing.

The problem with is is the dozens of shitty bands that abound in that pool.
And like I said, stop calling it dadrock. Do we call Dylan or Springsteen dadrock? No?
It's just to anger idiots and keep them from coming here. I'm not saying I approve or disapprove it, but that's how it goes.

>I'm not disagreeing, but it was just an example. Just because Billy "Wrong Generation" Bob likes band [x] doesn't make band [x] bad, that's my thing.
That's pretty obvious. It's not that we hate them, we just despise the fans.
That's it.

>> No.41564730

>tfw dadrock songs eventually ended up being featured on TV commercials and played at sporting events
It's like the complete of opposite everything those bands originally stood for in the 60s-70s (anti-establishment and anti-materialism)
