Ridin Dirty. for sure. especially start w/ Murder, One Day, and Diamonds & Wood. All great entry points into what makes Southern hip hop unique.
others: honestly, Paul Wall is pretty good. Even though he's white, his sound is a very good representation of the Houston style. Check out "Sittin Sidewayz".
TI's early stuff is pretty cool, although its a little closer to the "trap" sound (you all know which kind of "trap" i'm talking about. no need to start shit). Same goes for Lil Boosie, EARLY Lil Wayne, and Waka Flocka Flame.
Three 6 Mafia is fucking dope, but they're baaarely what I'd call southern. I think the Memphis rap has a sound of its own. Their early stuff is super dark and okkvlt as fuck. Later is pretty great too, especially Most Known Unknowns.
I'd start off with UGK. To me, they really embody southern hip hop the most. |
