Exactly, also it's a lot easier to compare music to the music of its time. For example trends are very evident when you go by year and also it eliminates the problem of ranking artists who grew up listening to other artists on the same list (in general anyway). It's not fair to compare someone who existed before a genre and someone who existed after.
