I think one of the things to remember about English Settlement is that the first half of it sounds quite a bit like Drums & Wires or something; it's that poppy new wave that made XTC what they are. In the second half, they sort of go off into more rhythmic new wave, and the first time I listened to it that change was jarring and I didn't really care for the second half. Once I "accepted" that the album takes a tonal shift midway, I think I've come to like it much more.

It can be too.
And I know there are lots of bad greatest hits collections out there, but Upsy Daisy is actually pretty cohesive, and a good place to start I'd say because you get a couple awesome tracks from each album, and you can investigate further as you gravitate to particular songs. Oh and all the tracks are in chronological order, from earliest stuff to latest.
