ITT: we discuss Pixies - EP 1
More like EP 1.0
>1.0
>>39816478WTF is that a dick on the cover?
Probably the worst thing the Pixies have released, that being said, it's not that bad. The pixies have set the bar pretty damn high so it's hard not to be a little disappointed, but if you consider the fact that kim deal isn't with the band anymore, this ep sounds closer to frank black's solo stuff. And if you compare it to the material frank black's put out over the years, it's really not that bad.
>>39816488>>39816501>>39816559think outside the p4k
>>39816561>>39816478WTF!!!!!Is this Death Pixies?
>>39816667>1.0
for those who haven't heard it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjmcsPpwNas
>mfw every track on ep 1 is better than bagboy >mfw when no one knows how to articulate themselves without citing pitchfork reviews
>>39816789It wasn't so hard to do better than bagboy
>>39816607Yeah it's limp as fuck compared to anything they've done before. Even the previous single Bagboy sounded pretty good but this is pretty lame in comparison. Completely average and made to seem even worse sat side by side with the band's pretty stellar prior output. In typical Pitchfork style, the '1.0' is given for effect and not really reflective of the quality of the EP.
>>39816861Strange they didn't give it the monkeypissinginitsownmouth rate.
As someone who just came back from the future, I can confirm that p4k has given the reissue an 8.7
>>39816789This is wrong.
>>39816915this monkey's gone to pissing in its mouth
I really liked Andro Queen until Frank started speaking demonspeak or italian or something.
>>39816861I'd say it's at least in the 5-6 range
In retrospect I never listened to Trompe Le Monde. How does it hold up to the previous 3?
>tfw Pixies peaked at Surfer Rosa and Doolittle
>>398170054-5 for me, 6 if they'd added Bagboy to it too.
>>39817027It's good, maybe not as strong as the other three, but it's still good album in it's own right. Alec eiffel and subbaculture are two of my all-time favorite pixies tracks
>>39817027It's the worst of their albums imo. It does have a few great moments though.
>tfw idgaf about the pixies and just spam 1.0 just so faggots think i "can't form my own opinion"
Oh good, I wanted to ask this but I didn't want a whole new thread for it. I've only listened to Trompe Le Monde and Surfer Rosa. (Surfer Rosa's great, I'm not so crazy about Trompe Le Monde.) What should I get next?
>>39817130>tfw people like that exist here and ruin discussion on things like this and CHz.
>>39817130Have you seen that dick on their cover?
>>39817130>idgaf about the pixiesOK, so you can't form your own opinion.
>>39817155Bossanova. Then sell your soul to Doolittle.
>>39817155>hasn't heard Doolittle yetDude, goNow
Bagboy > Indie Cindy > What Goes Boom > Another Toe > Andro Queen
where's is mycome on pilgrim love?
>>39817191this. do it in this order
Bagboy was fantastic and is one of the best Pixies songs (top 20 for sure)This EP has two really good songs, 1 good song and one eh song.Overall I'd say it's a 7/10 EP.I'm looking forward to any more content they release.I'm a big Frank Black fan and don't expect there to be some magical difference between a "Frank Black" song and a "Pixies" song considering Frank was the lead songwriter for both.I think people over act like Kim's absence can be felt are fucking retarded and probably didn't listen to Bossanova or Trompe Le Monde.
>>39817223this is a great ep, now go away, this thread isn't ITT: pixies albums we like
>>39817327how welcoming of you... at least i didn't just spam>1.0asshole
>>39817327lel read it again
>>39816607Kim Deal had fucking nothing at all to do with 99% of Pixies songs, and literally nothing to do with the ones after Doolittle. Every single song they've released since Bagboy is better than shit like Bam Thwok, which is and always will be the worst Pixies release, even with the magical Kim Deal appearinghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDOOpNHXc6oSeriously, it's shit.
>>39817313>I'm a big Frank Black fan and don't expect there to be some magical difference between a "Frank Black" song and a "Pixies" song considering Frank was the lead songwriter for both. But there's a difference between a Catholics song and a Pixies song. >which is what Frank Black forgot
>>39817313>difference between a "frank black" song and a "pixies" songThe pixies were always far more chaotic and experimental. Frank black's material, while good in it's own right, lacks the spontaneity and tension that the pixies deliver in spades
>>39817313I still think the best albums Pixies-band members did are Last Splash, Doolittle and Surfer Rosa. So yeah, I think Kim's absence did weight on the final result of this EP. It sounds like they were drained of all the (excuse me for this definition, but I can't find a better one) teenage-strenght they had back then. It just seems like they lost everything Pixies-related. Black's voice doesn't even hold up to the old albums.
>>39817434I don't expect the guy to write identical music all his life. There's very little similarities between Bone Machine and U-Mass. People act like there's a "Pixies sound", and when they do they usually are referencing a very little amount of their earlier output.
>>39817439This.EP1 is a good Catholics release, but a bad Pixies release.
>>39817191>>39817203thanks
>>39817476Nah, there's a Pixies sound. It's on Bagboy, not really on EP1
>>39817439I'm not denying there's a difference, I'm saying I don't expect the guy to "switch" to Pixies mode. They've always been his songs; nobody else wrote Pixies songs except for a couple of Kim ones. There's not going to be a difference between Pixies and Frank Black except for if Charles intentionally tries to emulate his older music. Pixies is essentially just a different backing band for him to continue writing his songs.
i think the first song is alright so far. the autotune doesnt make it that shit.whats wrong with me.
>>39817477EP1 sounds nothing like Catholics. It sounds like Bluefinger if anything, which isn't a fucking surprise considering they're written by the same guy.I don't know what people can possibly expect; there is no external influence for Charles' songwriting. It's all him.
>>39817477Does it really matter what name is on it? It's Charles, Joey and Dave together making music they want to make. Why should anyone else give a fuck?
>>39817612Because people are retarded and seem to think a guy should be making music as if the last 20 years didn't happen.
>>39817570Nah. >>39817612Because it's not good. >>39817628>using age as an excuse
>>39816478Is this Ralph Steadman?
>>39817526Andro Queen is the best song on the EP. Not because it's that great, it's just better than the rest.
>>39817658that's what i thought it was too
>>39817654I'm not using age as an "excuse", I'm saying that Pixies has always been Charles' band, so of course the music they make after 20 years isn't going to sound nothing like the music Charles has made for 20 years. What can you possibly expect?
>>39817130you seem proud of your shitposting
>>39817688Better music than what we got
Other than Frank's voice having changed a bit over the years, any of these new songs could fit just nicely on Trompe le Monde, so that makes them good enough for me.It's like everyone thinks they're gonna come back and make another Surfer Rosa or Doolittle. Also, Jayson Greene is a bell end. I've always thought so.
>>39817718I really liked it. But I'm a fan of his work; Frank Black, Teenager of the Year and Bluefinger are as good as Pixies to me. So shrug.
>PUT THE COCK IN COCKTAILdamn..
>>39817743Bias fanboy is bias
>>39817809Liking somebody makes me biased?I don't like his work with Catholics that much. I like most his "Frank Black" work and the last few Black Francis albums. I'm sorry if this means I'm biased on this anime imageboard of objectivity.
I just finished listening to this and i kind of enjoyed it, except when the last song kind of dragged on.am i a pedestrian now
>>39817849It's OK I accept your apology. Just try to watch it next time
>>39817970it means you're not a p4kdrone
>>39816478Is it really shit? I haven't even heard any of it.
>>39820363judging by the p4k review it's not even worth listening to
>>39818091But pitchfork just aligned themselves with the point of view I already had
>>39820421are you going to listen to it?
