I've actually found a number of great artists because of them being featured on television shows. Most notably The Knife (Fever Ray was on Breaking Bad).

I don't think the problem is within the "muh hipster level" stuff, for me it's more about taking a song out of its context. For example, people refer to Nick Cave's "People Ain't No Good" as "that song from Shrek 2". Fuck you, it ain't a song from a film, it's off a beautiful love album everyone should know and adore. I mean, come on.
