Could I get some prog metal recommendations?Pic related.
Sure.
If you like Opeth check out Edge of Sanity.
maudlin of the Well - Bath and Leaving Your Body Map
>>38920135Just listened to The Blue Ghost/Shedding Qliphoth and....holy shit, I was blown away. This is an incredible band.
>>38920025take a look at this list.Though I don't fully embrace it's actually a good resource for starters.http://www.metalstorm.net/users/list.php?list_id=58
Scar Symmetry-Holographic Universe. In my opinion that was their only memorable album, previous ones were meh and posterior ones went from having 1 singer doing everything to 2 doing certain parts, no ty. This one is rather good though, give it a listen.
>>38922344Thank you sir.
>>38920025Intronaut - prehistoricisms
Dream Theater - Scenes From a MemorySymphony X - The Odyssey Between the Buried and Me - ColorsProtest The Hero - Fortress
>inb4 its not prog
>>38922966My other favorite band.
>>38923223Charts don't need to be this fucking bigWhen will people realise this
>>38923322What's wrong with a big chart?
>>38923421It misses the entire point of an _essentials_ chart
>>38923443It gives you the essentials of 10 sub-genres
>>38923223This is the most disguisting picture ever.
>>38923486You only need max 2 albums from each subgenre, otherwise it's just wasting space. It's just an excuse for people to slap all their favourite albums on a chart and for other people to get annoyed when their favourites don't get included.
>>38923553And I found a bunch of great stuff from this huge chart, but your preference is your preference
>>38920025DEVIN TOWNSEND
>>38922769>The OdysseyIt's a good song, but the album as a whole is pretty lack luster. Try Divine Wings or Twilight in Olympus.
>>38920025If you liked Ghost Reveries, you'll dig this. Akerfeldt of Opeth even guests on this record, doing some backing vocals and a little guitarwork.
>>38923879whoops, forgot pic
>Ctrl-F>No Disillusion
>>38923879Gracias.
If OP can wait a little while, I can give him every Symphony X album except their first.
Only band close to Opeth, is Insomnium. So if you like opeth, listen to insomnium.

I'm not even kidding.I thought this would be some really bland psuedo-prog deathcore sort of like Born of Osiris, but man, I was wrong.
Give this a try OPhttp://banishedsoulsovforbiddendesire.bandcamp.com/track/choking-on-lifemight be what you're looking for
>>38931764and yeah, I classify this as prog metal
>>38931764YYYYYYEEESSSS.Flourish is amazing to hear live.
>>38923223>Behold The ArctopusYuss>Progressive Death Metal>No Still Life, just Blackwater ParkWhat the fuck, man?
Orphaned Land - Mabool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZUcWngEtcMStrapping Young Lad - The New Black http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMapSKvhLPkTherion - Secrets of the Runes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAQwSGGKNhgNot all is strictly prog, I just learned something about myself
>>38931764instead it's just pretty good psuedo-prog deathcoreFlourish is hnnnnnnnnnnng. one of my all time favorite songs
>>38931764Saw these guys on complete accident. This album still blows my mind.
I got a ton of relatively unknown recs in the vein of BtBaM and maudlin of the Well I'm gonna throw out there. First is pic related, my AOTY 2012.Follow the White Rabbit - Endorphinia>jazzy prog metal, tons of genre blending
>>38934482This albums great, though I think an opeth fan might like In the Absence of Truth and Wavering Radient a bit better.
>>38935093Dreadnought - Lifewoven>unbelievable prog black metal album, tons of different sounds and instruments, just truly amazingI only listened to this one last night as I was going to sleep, so I'm not really an expert on it, but I was absolutely blown away, and I could see it being my AOTY 2013, depending on some of the other contenders.
>>38935182Obsidian Kingdom - Mantiis>varies greatly between black metal and acoustic parts, some jazz segments, and EDM influences>concept of the album is a theme or single song divided over 14 smaller parts, each wildly different from the last. This is my runner-up AOTY 2012. I reccomend this one to everyone, regardless of whether or not they listen to metal. There's something for everyone in Mantiis.Get it here: http://obsidiankingdom.bandcamp.com/Also get the Dreadnought one, forgot to post link since it's Name Your Price:http://dreadnoughtdenver.bandcamp.com/album/lifewoven
>>38935290Pomegranate Tiger - Entities>instrumental prog metal, very like Scale the Summit but better IMO, a lot more experimentalTheir first release. I expect great things from them. Unfortunately no link for DL
I know They're just Traditional Heavy Metal, but Iron Maiden's 4 most recent albums have sounded pretty progressivehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06qJVpUSKZY
>>38935437The Matador - Descent Into the Maelstrom EP>progressive sludge metal, BM influencesNot sure what else to say about it. Vurt is a fantastic song. Not that the rest isn't good or anything, that's just my fav.Get it here: http://thematador1.bandcamp.com/
>>38935290This is awesome. Thanks for the U/Ls.
>>38935547That's all the bandcamp ones I know that are free. I guess I'll just list my recommendations from that massive chart this guy >>38923223 posted earlier, since it wasn't too bad even though it was way too big.Dream Theater - Metropolis Part 2Liquid Tension Experiment - L.T.E. 2Blotted Science - Machinations of DementiaAnimals as Leaders - s/t (my fav off the prog math section, not as good as Pomegranate Tiger though)Scale the Summit - Carving Desert CanyonsCynic - FocusGojira - The Way of All FleshGorguts - ObscuraOpeth - Blackwater ParkVed Buens Ende - Written in WatersBtBaM - ColorsThe Human Abstract - NocturneProtest the Hero - FortressSiKth - Death of a Dead DayAngra - Temple of ShadowsKamelot - The Black HaloBaroness - Blue RecordIntronaut - Valley of SmokeMastodon - Crack the SkyeThe Ocean - Precambrian (my all-time fav album)Amorphis - Silent Watersmaudlin of the Well - BathThat's not to say that any of the others are particularly bad or anything, but those are just the ones I listened to and really liked.>>38935629Very glad you like it. I've been trying to get people to listen to that one for ever now. You're only like the 2nd person ;_;
>>38935919Here's some random stuff I found in the archive:Agalloch - The Mantle>Folk black metal with an emphasis on acoustic sound, universally recognized as god-tier albumhttps://mega.co.nz/#!mREECLbY!O8cfO38ZmhEF-P1dBd-ABgIGFT57YXPNBYUkUxwemrsmaudlin of the Well - BathThis is the one with the yellow cover everyone was bonering over earlier>Atmospheric classical with heavy but restrained black metal influences, definitely worth being bonered overhttps://mega.co.nz/#F!9s4jHD6B!SP2S1GSfwxpyUzoSVjzEzwmaudlin of the Well - Leaving Your Body Map>same idea, still greathttps://mega.co.nz/#!bwZTUL5L!MJJE_xKtRa53f2KxErq_RT4WnHwFrbxIdw-Imj4KwI0Animals As Leaders - s/t>instrumental prog metal with djent sound and strong jazz influenceshttps://mega.co.nz/#!Q80gBA4I!BV3Z-Ab1QO3X-QwJPXEIVl8kKcd0EZCFiBlPdk_MZzoBetween the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect>I like it better than Colors personally, but pretty much the same soundhttps://mega.co.nz/#!YkYUXBBJ!SWoYHkMojAEO_jhmP7WXwDtNf0hnzMqQQWu393O86y4
people don't like this because of the hardcore influences but I think it's way superior to both The Black Lodge and Weight of Oceans.
