Okay, so I'm looking for jazz. I'm leaning to the avant-garde/ free side of things, but if it's good it's good.

Just started getting into it. I've looked at lists, including /mu/ essentials, rym, allmusic, etc. I want some personal opinions though. I would post the artists/albums that I'm into already, but it only seems to lead to [so pleb], [so fedora], [so MEME LOL >>>/b/]. Okay...

If you like Avant-garde, Bebop, Post-Bop, Ragtime, Big Band, Swing, Jazz Fusion, Jazzcore, etc. Get in here.

Let's discuss /jazz/.

Hard for me to get into post 60's jazz

If you're looking into avant garde stuff. Please listen to Atlantis by Sun Ra.

If you're relatively new to jazz, I suggest listening to different versions of great tunes. Look for different versions of Cherokee (Indian Love Song), that tune is really amazing and I think its a good introduction to different artists and their styles.

Does anyone else feel like there is a lack of appreciation for Oscar Pettiford and Cannonball? I've just been unable to take in how people don't usually mention them when talking of great virtuosos.

60s Blakey or any of Art Blakey's stuff really is what you could look into if you've experienced a considerable amount of Bebop

Also I honestly feel like Blue Train by John Coltrane is a bit underrated. Listen to the second track: Moment's notice, I think that would be a good starting point for more orthodox hard bop.

If viewed C.P. as an 'innovator,' Cannonball was never an innovator imo. Yes, he has some amazing chops, but he was never a groundbreaking musician as much as he was a great bop musician.

I think that the degree of innovation was very different, but I wouldn't say that Cannonball "never" innovated, His incorporations of the blues and gospel music into the hard bop idiom wasn't unheard of, but it was unique. And yes, I agree that he was never a groundbreaking musician. But he is unappreciated, I believe this to be very true.

Dolphy was ridiculously good both with creating new sounds and having mighty chops. His style is just a bit outside keeping true to jazz tradition.

I actually think there's a cycle that once you go 2deep into loss of structure or melody that you begin to crave the basics again. There have been times where I went into complete obscurity with my taste only to find myself, months later, listening to pop/hip-hop music from my formative years.

The biggest thing is not to force it though, which I think is a big problem with the way /mu/ operates in general.

Sarcasm is "a sharp, bitter, or cutting expression or remark; a bitter gibe or taunt."[1][2] In modern usage, the word "sarcasm" is commonly interpreted as involving irony,[3] or employs ambivalence,[4] but traditionally sarcasm was not necessarily irony.[5]

I liked his three albums with Han Bennink that I have heard.

Bailey's Solo Guitar, Vol. 1 from 1971 was also nice.

Try the Avant-Garde by John Coltrane and Don Cherry.

It's moving in the avant direction, but is still pretty grounded in bebop. It is tonallly and melodically liberated, but it still keeps the rhythmic constrains of bop and creates a really interesting concotion. Fantastic players too. Ed Blackwell is an underatted af drummer.

If you don't mind scratchy early recordings, the most obvious place is to start with Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens (JSP box set being the best collection). Jelly Roll Morton's band is a good alternative if you want it more piano focused and Latin influenced. The Chicago guys like Bix/Tram/etc. are a little watered down but still very good.

Replying to an old post, but some people might be monitoring.

Definitely check out Last Exit. Almost their whole discography is in the archive. Brötzmann's album Shadows also has a Last Exit vibe going on.

Other group in that vein is Bill Laswell's Arcana. Laswell on bass, Derek Bailey on guitar and Tony Williams on drums.

I've had a nice little jazz and classical bender tonight. I'm really digging the "jazz-concerto" form of Rhapsody in Blue, but sound-wise I'm gripped more by dark, heavy tones like Bitches Brew, Ole Coltrane, and mid-70s King Crimson. Is their anything out there that kind of fits that description?

Also slightly off-topic, but I've also been through Bartok's The Miraculous Mandarin and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, and they were both mind-blowing, so any recs in that sort of direction (even better if they're jazz-oriented) would be greatly appreciated.

Pic vaguely related to King Crimson.
