37674401 No.37674401 [Reply] [Original]

So I'm changing my ISP to Comcast today because Verizon won't fix my service and the only other choice I have is Comcast in my area.
I need to know, how is Comcast when it comes to pirating music?
I heard that they were more strict than Verizon who has never given me a problem, no warnings on anything.

I usually use share sites, I rarely fuck with torrents, I only do so when I'm really desperate to find an album that I can't find on a share site.

So anyone with them or who were with them in the past know how they are on piracy?

>> No.37674445

America, though people always say it's not the downloaders, it's those who upload/distribute pirated content.

This is a big thing in America right now and has been for years. And the RIAA, MPAA, the record labels, and government have been trying their best for years to stop it,

Everybody is on the fence about piracy in this country, some people say shit can't be done, some say it can. But why OP is asking is because sometimes ISPs can act as middle men to the RIAA to get you caught and shut down your internet or get your fined.

>> No.37676295

I don't know how they are on piracy in general.
But I heard that they'll throttle you if you use torrents, even shit that's 'legally' torrented.

The only very bad thing I heard about comcast was last year when some guy got his service cancelled because he was doing heavy loads of work, using heavy amounts of data and he passed their cap. Shit that most people don't do, but his job depended on the internet.

But I knew another guy who used comcast/xfinity and he used to torrent large amounts of shit.

I've had that happen to me several times. It's not a big deal, as long as you know how to handle it.Did you read the attached letter? Sometime within in the next 3 weeks you'll have to meet with someone from the RIAA. They'll give you this big long speech about how you're hurting the artists you love, and that you violated law and are subject to a max $150,000 fine. Then they'll seize your computer and remove any music they believe to be illegally downloaded. Then they'll fine you a couple hundred bucks and you'll never hear from them again.

Torrents aren't really a site. With torrents you go somewhere like the pirate bay, or kickass torrents and get a torrent file. You download some program like bittorrent or utorrent and it allows you to use/download from torrents. You in a pool with other users when you torrent since torrents depend on other connections to be download, if you're not masking your IP, you IP is in a pool with these other users. Sometimes there can be a tracker in there for the RIAA or some shit ready to pull you up..

Filesharing sites like Mediafire, Rapidgator, Zippyshare, etc along those lines. Are direct download sites and you get a zip or a rar folder. These are sites you can find just by doing a search in your browser and you can download directly from them, but you need a program like Winrar to open the Zip or Rar.

You're on /mu and don't know this shit?

Real talk time.
Hardly anyone gets hit for pirating music. No one gives a shit about obscure albums from the 70's and 80s that scaruffi recommended. movies and television are a different story, and the easiest way to get hit for pirating is to torrent porn.

I have comcast and have never had an issue. I am currently seeding 500+ torrents (all private trackers for movies & music). My apartment uses 800 GB of bandwidth a month regularly and we have never had issues with using too much data.

The only DMCA thing we ever had was a letter because one of my roommates downloaded some porno off a public tracker. Comcast just forwarded us the letter and nothing ever came of it.

stick to private torrent sites and direct downloads (mediafire, mega, etc) and you'll be fine

comcast is part of the six strikes thing. I use them and have been pirating for as long as I have had service, even stuipid shit like downloading movies right on release from the pirate bay. I use mostly private trackers now though. never ever gotten a letter from them

>> No.37677147

I've had comcast for years, as it's the only thing available in my town. I have terabytes of hard drives full of tv shows, music, software, and music and have never had any problem. i've had it since the days of limewire and emule and still use it for direct downloads, torrents, rutracker, etc. never had a problem or a warning or anything.

their customer service sucks though. i got a letter in snail mail last week saying i was being charged an additional $7/mo for some modem i was supposedly leasing from them that they didn't realize i had until years into my contract. it basically boiled down to my word against theirs that my modem was one that i owned and that if they didn't believe me they could send someone out to look at it or i was canceling, so of course they backed off and took the charge off. also when i moved last year i was supposed to turn in the cable box at the local place but i couldn't find the remote and they WOULD NOT take the box without the remote (like... wouldn't take it at all), and apparently couldn't charge me for just the remote because it comes as a "package." so i set the cable box on the counter, took a picture of it, and said "i'm leaving this right here and i'm taking a picture of me leaving it right here. if i get charged for this thing i'm calling my lawyer." never got charged.

also they won't let me get JUST internet, which means i have this completely useless cable box sitting next to my tv that never gets turned on but apparently it's the same cost for internet whether you have basic cable or not.

I currently use Comcast. Never have had any problems regarding illegal downloads, and I download every day (even from sites like piratebay). I get most of my music from rutracker, which I think is harder to follow since it isn't US based. I got a 12 month deal for 29.99 a month, my usual download speed is around 1.5-2 MB a sec. I recommend them.

>> No.37677614

Comcast rarely cares. My friend got a letter from him but they didn't do anything else. They didn't throttle traffic when I had them. I think they are participating in the six strikes rule, however.
