Rap History.
I'm not asking you to do my homework for it.
I just want a list of names of rappers that I should research that you feel have carved the trajectory of the rap culture since it's "beginning"....
I want to read up on everything abut RAP... I need to do this in 2 weeks
It's a personal challenge. not really homework at all.

old school (2): run-dmc, ll cool j (radio)
golden age (main): beastie boys, boogie down productions, public enemy, ice-t, n.w.a etc
conscious rap/early alternative rap: the native tongues (jungle brothers, de la soul, a tribe called quest etc)
jazz-rap: gang starr, pete rock & c.l. smooth
early southern rap: scarface (and the geto boys), UGK
latin rap: cypress hill
g-funk: dre (the chronic) and snoop (doggystyle), also above the law cause they helped invent it
west coast underground: the pharcyde, del tha funkee homosapien (hieroglyphics), souls of mischief
wu-tang clan and the beginning of the east coast renaissance
biz markie and the lawsuit about sampling (change of the overall sound of hip-hop)
that pretty much sums up the old school and the golden age all the way up to about 1993. this is only a rough list so i left out a lot of other artists worth mentioning, but i guess you'll read about them as you go along with the ones i listed
also worth mentioning are gil scott heron and the last poets, they experimented with spoken word and poetry years before hip-hop |
