I've had this argument a bunch of times, it boils down to:

1. It doesn't have to be with electronic instruments. The Roots are definmitely hip-hop - so are they playing acoustic electronic music?

2. Something can have a lot of influence with the other without being of it. Blues had a lot of influence on rock like hip-hop did on electronic, but does that makes blues a rock sub-genre (blues rock not withstanding)?

3. Yes, disco influenced both, but in different ways. Hip-hop developed out of a Jamaican practice called mceeing (sp?) while modern electronic music came out of many evolutions after disco.

4. Electronic music goes back way before hip-hop, but I'm pretty sure DJ Kool Herc was inspired by Russolo and Tangerine Dream when he got the ball rolling for hip-hop.

There are tons of hip hop styles, /mu/ only talks about rap though. From electro style like Bambaataa, the original breakeat genres, instrumental, turntablism, trip hop, plus other styles that rely heavily on hip hop music, its just /mu/ only thinks of Wu-Tang and Kanye when people say hip hop.
