Hi /mu/ first time poster here ... You might get these kinds of questions a lot :S but what should I expect for when learning the violin? If there are any violin players on here tonight any help would be much appreciated! Just anything I should anticipate or know that could help me.

Most of experience comes from the piano. I've played for roughly four years now. But I know some random shit on the harmonica and guitar. Thank you in advance for anyone who can maybe :O

As someone who has very limited experience on the cello after playing piano for awhile, your primary difficulty will be getting a clear and constant sound using the bow. Sorry I don't know any more.

I concurr! Pressure, along with a correct ammount or rosin will be a big step towards a stable sound.

Also, look up proper pose so you don't fuck up your arms.

As I said, pressure on the bow, rosin, posture.

I'd also add that you should learn how to smooth movement out to get a constant sound. Don't cheap on strings cause they actually influence the sound to some extent, or aleast inanely cheap strings sound bad.

There's an initial toughness in "getting it" with correct bow movement. As buzzing with brass instruments, once you get over it it eases up.

Learns the parts to some extent, materials. Get up and running on theory for the violin is a technical instyrument and as a bonus, read un on maintenance.

What are you aiming for?

What is the rosin? Probably a really nooby question :S

And as for what I'm aiming for I'm aiming for:

This is what initially inspired me. Basically all her music. For me it's less about composing as it is being able to play on that kind of level as her. Granted I know it'll take a lot of time but I'm completely willing to spend hours and hours at this. To get this shit right.

>> No.36820959

>>36820898
OP, tip:
depending on the tone be very sparse with rosin. To get a smooth tone like that dub violin it's less about rosin and more about pressure.

At first you might be tempted to apply a shitton of rosin just to get a noise faster but it'll sound as twangy as as redneck hilbilly's old fiddle. Practice pressure.

>> No.36820969

As someone who has played the upright bass for 8 years and played the violin for 3, 1) don't fucking show off, 2) keep your bow at a good tension, 3) use rosin regularly but lightly, and 4) put in the time to get your damn left hand/arm position correct, it makes a world of difference

basically a block of sap that makes your bow grip the strings more
not using it will give you a very airy sound, using to much will make you sound like a dumbass who uses too much rosin

ahw what, no more upright bass?
do you still play it now you've learned violin?

read my post for the tone, we're in luck here OP, gambit is afoot

rosin comes from pine trees, it's that sticky substance. it's condensed in a block that you can slide your bow on, it's vital to get tone (even more so if you try to use the bow on a guitar ala sigur ros/jimmy page) but you have to be sparse with it or it impairs you playing and makes things too twangy; not what you're looking for.

I'm self taught and I compose and luckily I can tell you will is 90% of it. will you get a teacher?

as far as starting from scratch you'd probably be better off with a teacher, teaching yourself the foundations can lead to bad habits (as is the case with any instrument)

Only reason I didn't get a teacher is because I am damned broke; by all means go for it OP if you have the greens to go with it. Self teaching won't help posture. at all.

But do experiment, OP. it's the key to musical individualism. Since you're a /mu/ newcomer let me brainwash you a bit: listen to more string music and more dub. already sketch out things, begin producing. Get it on, small steps are for Tyrion Lannister.
Is it all OP? Any other questions? Wanna shoot the shit?

To be completely honest I don't think I'd be able to make my own music. I don't really think of myself as creative. But who knows maybe.

And I listen to pretty much everything as is. For me everything has something to offer. I'll go and look up more stringed/dubstep shit. If anyone has any songs to drop off please do so. I'll go through them all :O

As for other questions I can't think of any off the top of my head.

how far are you planning to progress skill-wise on the violin? as far as that dancing girl?
depending on how good you plan to be, your setup and form can be absolutely crucial. obviously that girl has terrible form but still can make a sound, but if you're going to be practicing seriously for any significant amount of time, you will run a high risk of injury and also look kind of dumb to musicians who know how to play...

Yah. As of right now my goal is to get as good as her eventually. Once I reach that point I'll try and figure out where I should go from there. o.o

Also to clarify I don't really plan on performing in front of anyone really. Maybe for my close friends I'd play but that'd be about it. This is more of a self interest thing, that could be really useful later on.

>if you're going to be practicing seriously for any significant amount of time you will run a high risk of injury
Can you explain to me how? And I do plan on practicing for a long time then have some intervals for a few hours and go back.

>> No.36822030

>>36821648
ok, i guess you can go self-taught then.

>injury
the violin is not an easy instrument to play. the position of the violin is not entirely natural; you have to hold up your violin way up and to the left. you have to resist the pressure downwards that your right arm (bow) produces as well the weight of the instrument and your arm. at the same time, you have to hold it in such a way that your whole hand and fingers can have a range of free movement along the axis that the strings are on.

professional classical musicians have collectively spent literally millions of hours in the last half century alone studying posture, muscular/tendons/joint anatomy, reading books, writing books, experimenting with technique - all in the name of reducing tension and making it so you can actually play this instrument for hours without ruining your back, neck, wrist, shoulder, etc. i myself in my 13th year of violin study had tendinitis in my right arm/wrist (slightly more unusual than left) and had to take almost 8 months off from playing. it's because making the same movements hundreds of times a day (pronation/supination of arm/wrist) wears on your body. imagine, i dont know, putting on and taking off a pair of glasses a few thousand times (vague estimate of # of notes in a bach solo partita). you'd feel some strain after the first hundred, right?

this is why it's so important that people who are going to be attempting to play their instrument seriously be set up by a good teacher so that they don't end up with problems down the road. because you'll probably end up spending hundreds or thousands of hours doing the same family of repetitive motions and you need to do them right.

like any athlete, you have to learn how to do it properly or you'll get injured.

i know that was rambling but do you have any more specific questions? 16 years of violin/viola study here all night.

>> No.36822059

>>36821648
oh yeah, i meant to mention that the violin/dubstep girl's wrist is like, flat against the neck for some reason. don't do that. your wrist should more or less be on a straight line with your forearm. curling in or splaying back like she's doing creates serious tension in the tendons that control your wrist joint. also it makes it incredibly hard to shift and do vibrato.
