hey, I'm only here because /tv/ is an insufferable board. I don't want to sound like a knob, but I'm willing to bet I (and many others in this thread) know a little more about film than your defensive pre-teen ass.

it's definitely better than that tagline. it was advertised really badly.

it was directed by the guy who did sean of the dead and hot fuzz, and as a result the directing is really solid and snappy. and it's really well-cast and, i think, well-written.

obviously it's not a serious art film of serious art, but it's hella fun and well-made and has a nice soundtrack. i don't know why it's getting so much hate here, other than disdain for faux-indie things maybe? i don't know.

that's because the movie was written with an ending that has him go with knives but that ending utterly failed in test screenings so they added a ramona ending to a movie that'd been building up to him ending up with knives the entire time and as a result didn't build ramona's character up well enough

Most people around here, if they like or dislike a movie, will give specific reasons why.

But whenever someone mentions Scott Pilgrim around here, it's always, always vague statements of "I liked it" and "It was pretty good". No elaboration, even though most 4chan users love to elaborate on stuff.

They're SUPPOSED to be self-centered hipster 10-somethings. I wouldn't call it straight-up satire, but it is poking fun at the "hipster" culture that we live in.

If anything, though, I'd say that the two characters that didn't follow this stereotype were Knives and [mostly] Ramona, which would be the two biggest catalysts for him to change since they're the love interests. Personally, I think it matters for him to change because he has the chance to change with two separate people, and it's great to see that he follows up and does stop being such a complete asshole... again, mostly, but I think any pretentiousness from him past the 3/4 mark of the film is just Cera's performance.

The hipster satire is all well and good, but coupled with the romance and action stuff, it reads more like a bizarre wet dream from the guy who wrote it.

Maybe I'd like it better if they ditched the whimsy of it and just made it a straight-up hipster satire piece, like a younger version of The Comedy.

Scott Pilgrim is a shitty film, funny to watch.

There's nothing to add about it, but reading some of your comments, I think I will.

The plot is nothing but a simplistic, stupid one, carried by decisions made by stupid, irritating characters, exploiting their personas to exaggeration to add a cartoonish effect, which takes down in one shot every piece of seriousness there could be to appreciate in the story.

Technically it made no innovation whatsoever, there's no mise en scene, there's obviously a camera, but there's no cinematography; all the visuals are depending on special effects, which are as exaggerated as the characters. If anything, the edition is invisible (mostly thanks to special effects[/lel]) and the sound design / soundtrack do their jobs.

Of course the themes and patterns are *hip* and *under-culture* so tumblr hipsters and neingag will love it. I don't hate it.

By this time, you better just watch Transformers; but that had Linkin Park, a barbie girl and the streets of New York, material not worthy of gifs in Tumblr and photography in Instagram.

>> No.36795232

>>36795109
I think that's what turns off a lot of people to the film. That is, the fact that it's not a straight-up satire and is in fact an action-romance film. Which is honestly fine, really, but I saw it when I was sixteen and didn't give two shits about satire, so all I saw was a really cool action movie with a bitchin' soundtrack and that guy from Nick & Norah not being a total bitch. Now that I look a little more deeply at it, though, I can appreciate it for both sides, but I can COMPLETELY see why someone wouldn't appreciate either side: the satirical side or the fun side. Which, again, is totally fine. I just dig it.
