I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with people crafting their own meanings from lyrics/songs. Songs with clear meanings are good, but leaving things up to interpretation can also be an important artistic tool.

The first time, I get a general idea of the kind of music it is, the second time I become more familiar with the songs, and the third time is the first real listen. ITAOTS and Trout Mask Replica are the only ones I can think of that were exceptions.
