Not really. It isn't like an encyclopedia of the sciences or something, where there are sweeping new developments in all fields every couple years to outdate your copies. The historical position of, say, Beethoven is relatively unchanged today from what it was 30 years ago, and consequently so is his article. The same goes for the majority of the books' content.

I've skimmed the newer edition looking for changes and it seems the main thing is they added new articles on people like David Bowie and got grad students to write them (judging by the lower quality of many new articles). So I don't feel like I'm missing out. Not enough to shell out $300/year to subscribe online, at any rate.
