I tried getting into Converge when Axe To Fall came out and thought it was just a bunch of mongoloids beating the shit out of their instruments.
Then I tried to get into them again when AWLWLB came out and this time thought they were excellent.

Jacob's vocals can be tough to get into. I remember being younger, just getting into death metal and shit, and still couldn't get into Converge's vocals, but they grow on ya.

That's one of my all time favorite albums. It's really a grower. I think the vocals really add to the concept of the album. The music is very feminine along with the themes of an estranged lover. This former lover eventually becomes a vague memory, much like the vocals which are near indecipherable. They are also very feminine in range. Just my way of looking at it.

This is really the only album where Jacob sings like this. He screams in all their other stuff but it's much dirtier and lower. It's mixed in with more cleanish vocals.

I only just got into Converge about 6 months ago, I'd been trying for a year or two. I didn't think it was heavy, I didn't think it was interesting, and I thought it was too dissonant.


Heavy: My personal definition of heavy was wrong. Heavy doesn't mean what people think it means. Many people would say that a metalcore band like BMTH is objectively heavier than a band like Death. And at first listen it may seem that way, but it's not, it's just mixed and produced in a more pleasing way, to an average listener. I used to hate Cynic's first album but love Traced In Air because of my perception of the "low quality" of Focus. Focus isn't low quality, it's just not as loud as most modern records will be. All of those thrash albums from the 80s you can't listen to? That's your fault, not theirs, it's just as heavy as anything made today.

Interesting: Every now and then I thought the music was catchy and groovy and cool, but that they would lose the momentum and that it sounded too spastic. Also wrong. These guys groove constantly. I just had yet to understand the rhythms, mostly because I was expecting your basic metalcore rhythms all of the time. Again, my fault, not theirs. These guys are the real deal, they're not simply creating shitty setups for shitty breakdowns. They're playing hardcore music, about as hardcore as possible as far as I've heard.

Dissonance: The vocals, holy shit. No one wants to hear that shit when they're first exposed. It's awful. But wait, that's what they're going for. Everything about Converge is supposed to be intense and emotional, and the way he yowls into the microphone like a fucking idiot demonstrates his passion and genuine love and interest for the music he is making. I also started listening to way more Sun Ra. Converge sounds like The Beatles compared to much of Sun Ra's music.
tl;dr
if you like metal and hardcore you probably like Converge, but your expectations are in the way

Converge is fucking awesome and I truly feel sorry for you for being a 'it's just noise' kind of person.

Try playing it when you're in a really pissed mood. Treat the vocals as an instrument. Associate its aggression with emotional instability and not as noise. Jane Doe is a fucking beautiful album once it clicks.

Also, Jane Doe got a 7.7 from P4K, it's anything but "P4K approved garbage"

Too many people don't understand Jane Doe's vocals. Try imagining Jane Doe without them. It wouldn't work. It'd be the typical convoluted garbage that plagues metalcore. The vocals drive everything together. It gives it direction. The strength of the album comes from the vocals, not from the noisy guitars or crazy drumming.

And if you're pussy for that, then just listen to YFM or AWLWLB which uses somewhat intelligible vocals.

Jane Doe's printed lyrics differ quite a bit from what Jacob actually sings. The printed lyrics are like the original thought/poem that the song stemmed from. Especially on Concubine. I also think in the case of Jane Doe more so than thier other album the lyrics really aren't the important part. It's the feeling you get from the delivery. The album's overall theme seems to be a relationship that goes quite wrong, and the pains and frustrations, and eventually overcoming of it all. You can hear the pains, frustration, and desperation in his voice of a love gone sour, and I think that's the point.
