35181395 No.35181395 [Reply] [Original]

The janitors are deleting any and all threads that displease them.

Should I learn piano? I'd like to start producing with a DAW but I have no idea where to start and know nothing about creating music.

Yeah I've seen your thread like 3 times and everything past page 0 has been deleted..

I'm in a similar situation to OP. Would like to start producing but no musical background at all.
How does one go about doing this, or any general advice for getting into it?
Advice for OP (and me pls).

Study theory of music or fuck off.
No, you can't do good music without it.

>know nothing about music theory

Yes, you absolutely CAN spend your freetime doing whatever you want. But if you're ever actually going to progress anywhere, the best you could do is get yourself a piano and dick around with it for a few weeks. Then start reading some music theory.

Learning how to play and compose music is not something you can do just by sitting at your computer or just by reading a book. You need to actively switch between soaking in information and using that information.

To be frank, you're never going to get anywhere if you don't have the interest or patience to learn music theory, and you're not going to be able to use that music theory to do anything if you don't intend on learning how to play an instrument, as wel. A DAW won't do.

>> No.35182546

>>35181566
grab a DAW, dick around on some synths and have fun, if you're still doing it 3 years later then you're probably making decent stuff

mind you if you just have 0 talent that will never happen

>> No.35182775

>>35182546
Okay, i'm curious. I know literally nothing. I don't know theory, I don't know anything about bars, chords, rhythm, you get the gist. How would I go about starting? Just get a DAW and fuck around for a bit, make something, up it to a sc thread and get advice from there. Or should I learn theory first?

>> No.35182814

>>35182775
Learn theory first. It's hard enough getting to grips with the technical aspects of a DAW, let alone not understanding the technical aspects of music itself. It will be a lot easier to understand how to use the DAW and what you're trying to do if you have an understanding of theory.

Just get a teacher. I'm lucky enough to have a good friend who is also a popular YouTube pianist. He has taught me the basics of music theory, scales, chords, and reading sheet music, and I made more progress being taught by him in a month than I did in 6 months of teaching myself.

I was in the same position as you when I started producing. I do play drums, but had never played a tuned instrument. I got a crappy Midi keyboard and torrented FL, and just taught myself from there.
Definitely look up basic music theory (scales ect) familiarise yourself with the keys, and you can pretty much teach yourself the rest.

Alright so, so far:
Learn music theory
Learn the piano or any instrument online or through a tutor
Learn a DAW

I'll learn (basic) music theory first. I don't know how I'll go about learning piano online, if I get the cash I may get lessons, even for theory if I can afford it. I've downloaded Abelton so I'll learn through Youtube.

All goods? I'll post but it will take a while and will sound shit.

I'm not the guy who you were replying to, but I use an M-Audio Keystation 88es (it cost me around £130, which is around $200.) It has weighted keys to mimic the response of an acoustic piano, and it has a full sized keyboard. I'm quite pleased with mine.

>> No.35185968

learning piano is good for basic music theory concepts, like knowing what notes naturally sound good together, etc. Since you're most likely going to work with synths a lot of base principles apply especially when it comes to chord progressions. It's not necessary though, all things considered, and personally I suggest download a DAW, pirate a few VSTs, and fuck around. Best way to learn is to dive right in.

It also depends on what you want music you want to make as well. I mean, 5 years ago I was dicking around with an industrial/noise project and knew fuck all about actual music theory, and nowadays I spend more time programming synths than actually composing full songs.
