This is the greatest indie rock album of all time
ITT: opinions
>>34319115Facts
>>34319063neon bible is better
American Football
their s/t was better
This is honestly the most influential rock album of 2000-2009 imo, almost every one of the big name "lel so indeh" bands today made it by ripping off of Arcade Fire to some extent
>>34319136I agree m8
>indie rock>indie>genreNME pls
Wrong pic, OP.Here, your welcome.
>>34319173>rockI honestly think it's been more influential on modern indie pop.
One thing I cannot stress enough is that Arcade Fire is a shit band for shit people who like bad music and not having a good time
>>34319193>implying indie rock=indiele mental incompetence
>>34319206Most of the popular stuff these days seems to be really poppy but usually with rock instrumentation so I hardly even make the distinction anymore
>>34319206Seriously. All the indie pop rock shit I hear on the radio these days sounds like a bad rip off of arcade fire. (Mumford & sons, lumineers, etc)
>>34319195But thats a le folk album.
>>34319263Now how does Mumford & Songs rip off Arcade Fire? I can't recall the last time I heard a banjo in an Arcade Fire song.
>>34319256You know what I mean though, like the kind of baroque aesthetic that has crept into popular music, like with Mumford (though Mumford are absolute crap)I think the band that did what you're talking about is probably The Strokes, Is This It had pretty much the impact you're talking about
>>34319228One thing I cannot stress enough is how big of a faggot you are
this is better
>>34319228How does it feel to be a fucking idiot?
>>34319276>>One thing I cannot stress enough is that Mumford & Sons is a shit band for shit people who like bad music and not having a good time
>>34319276>add a banjo>OMG COMPLETELY DIFFERENTIf you can't pick up the rough similarities between the two then you're retarded
My vote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIqTGRrfVAw
>>34319319I do apologize actually, I've only heard a few songs off the radio. I just don't really recall any of that chamber instrumentation. It just seemed like they took the folk aesthetic and made it excessively poppy.
>>34319286I'll Believe in Anything is a goat song>>34319263Beat me to it, exactly that>>34319319>>34319345Rough is key, the whole kitschy thing that Arcade Fire did caught on in storm. All of the sudden everyone wanted a nine person band with weird instruments
>>34319136>>34319177I also agree.
>>34319281Honestly every single fucking song I here by really popular indie bands sounds exactly like that WHOOOOAAAA ooooohhh OOOOOOHHH OOOOOOOOH song on FuneralIt's like they've just been trying to recapture that songs success every fucking year since it came out
>>34319376Look at what happened after Nirvana put out Nevermind. It's another one of those albums that, while still pretty good, is masturbated to relentlessly. You also end up with a bunch of shitty copycats
>69 love songs
Exactly how ignorant are you?You Forgot It In People and Broken Social Scene's self-titled album. Nothing compares. Absolutely nothing.
>>34319063>indie rock>great
>>34319440That one is really good.
>>34319173how can you rip off a rip off
>>34319498built to spill is really overrated sorry. 7/10 on their best album
>>34319498I don't know what you're talking about, honestly. It might not seem like it now but at the time mixing baroque instrumentation with stadium rock styles was pretty novel.
I wholeheartedly agree. I've listened to pretty much every single praised Indie Rock album and even some great unsung ones, like Mice Parade's Eponymous debut. I can safely say that Funeral is the only one that truly lives up to it's tremendous hype. I'm not sure how far i would rank it in a GOAT list, but it is definitely one of the best records of all time.
>>34319484Not to mention that Arcade Fire picked up that chamber pop sound from their setup. Everyone might have ripped off of Arcade Fire, but they picked up their chamber pop sound from Broken Social Scene with their first two albums.
do you even boring and stuff?
>>34319498Keep It Like A Secret is so much better but this tops everything even though it's an EP.
>>34319565What's even the point of that EP when Building Nothing Out Of Something exists?
/mu/ these are the club cliches that will outlive my genetic line. What's the third?
Why does everything Arcade Fire make sound exactly the same?
>>34319544mmmmm I'm not so with you there. They might have snatched the "large band" thing from BSS but BSS was far more rock oriented and the closest it really comes to chamber pop is some of the more violin focused tracks but Arcade Fire really took it up a notch with all these accordions and shit.
>>34319550Now this one is just as Boring(and stuff) and bad as Is This It?
>>34319595lel, posted a reply instead of a new thread. Fail.
>>34319510it's actually the best "indie rock" album of all time
>>34319594Novocian and All Night Diner are the best tracks but one is on Build and the other is on Long Road
>>34319498Almost every rip off is a rip off of a rip off. But Arcade Fire is way more popular and well known in general. especially nowadays, than BtS, plus that album came out in the 90s. Basically all these new bands know they are directly influenced by Arcade Fire but they might not have heard Built to Spill
>>34319595Graduation by Kanye>>34319598Now wait a second, I barely like AF but there is a pretty notable difference in sound between the three albums.
>>34319624not even fucking close
>>34319550ain't this post punk?its too reeverby for rock
>>34319659Its considered post-punk revival, yes.
Do you guys ever yearn for the days when you were just getting into music and Is This It, Funeral, and Turn on the Bright Lights were completely mindblowing to you, on your shitty free earphones?
>>34319656don't fuck around though it is actually the best of all time
>>34319595Graduation
Everything Elephant 6 has put out is better than that album. Same goes for Phil Elverum.
>ctrl+f>is this it>strokes2farquad5me in this pleb thread
>>34319603I would say that's mostly Regine. She plays an accordion, and then the hurdy gurdy and organ on Neon Bible. However you really need to take into account how string and horn-heavy both Feel Good Lost and You Forgot It In People are. I know that they've cited Broken Social Scene as an influence at least once. I'm not even calling Arcade Fire out as ripping them off or anything, but I think YFIIP really exercised that sound first, and that really brought a lot of chamber pop to Arcade Fire's music. To go from having just a violinist and cellist on tour to actually recording as full-time members, I think it makes sense.
>>34319703Damn I remember that, I remember thinking I was the shit.
>>34319703Oh man, I remember when I used to google "best albums of 2000's/90's/etc" to find new music. I miss when everything seemed so fuggin new. Like I didn't know anything an even fuckin' MPP was like "what the fuck is this"
>>34319708I don't disagree, though I personally just might choose Lonesome Crowded West or Slanted and Enchanted over it. This obviously doesn't include psych rock though.
>>34319440One thing I cannot stress enough is that Broken Social Scene is a shit band for shit people who like bad music and not having a good time
>>34319063>indie rockI like how it isn't.
>>34319739It's in this thread you idiot, you didn't even ctrl f
>>34319741You know now I remember the horn section, I don't know why I forgot about them.I definitely see what you're talking about now.
>>34319708They just did what other Alt-Country bands were doing at that time, but with less interesting tones and song structures. They aren't bad, but they're so ridiculously far from the best.
>>34319440Probably the closest in this thread. Or at least the best indie rock album after the turn of the century.>>34319752I bet all the money I have in my special jar that you went through a bad breakup with one of their albums. There's nothing but good things to say about them and they're some of the funnest people out there. Piss off.
>>34319610It's just "Is This It" There's no question mark.
>>34319746I literally began my music education by going through best of the decade and best of the year lists on Pitchfork. I don't regret it though.
>>34319648>Now wait a second, I barely like AF but there is a pretty notable difference in sound between the three albums.I listened to their first three LPs and every track with few exceptions goes like this:intro, either starting out kinda slow or starting out with a beat that will be consistent throughout the trackgets fasterharmonious vocals start about 20 seconds inviolins or whatever strings they use kick in half way into the track150-200 beats per minuteconsistently gets louder towards the last quarter of the trackvocals start shouting at the apex of the crescendovibraphone/glockenspiel or whatever it is doing it's thing being twee
>>34319824Yo same here high five.
>>34319703I still love Turn on the Bright Lights. Come at me.
This album is better.
>>34319824yeah?I began my music education by going to collegefuck off
>>34319916Nothing wrong with that
>>34319876Oh if you look at it like that, then sure. But in overall sound, I'd say they differ.Funeral is this "majestic" chamber popNeon Bible is a darker indie rock than borders on some gothic influencesand The Suburbs is just indie rock.
>>34319958Damn you seem bitter
>>34319958what is informal context
>>34319953Lel, look at this plen and laff!
>>34319876And then there's this guy. Trying to archetype a band in a series of vague statements being thrown together as an objective viewpoint.
>>34319958You're probably a fun guy to hang around. I'm sure your friends don't think you're elitist at all.
>>34319916I think Turn On the Bright Lights is better than Is This It, but Interpol as a whole is a shitty band. The Strokes are alright.
>>34319703Ahh! Those were the days... I have a special place in my heart for Funeral though, because it was the only one of those 3 that kept me engaged even after my music taste developed and i started studying music theory. The others are pretty good though.
>>34319703Yes! Except replace Turn On The Bright Lights with Set Yourself On Fire. And crying. There were many tears shed.
>>34319063OP that's not Pixies - Doolittle>>34319193indie rock is a genre, indie by itself isn't>>34319263Yeah they're all like a bad amalgamation of AF and Death Cab
>>34319876>What is 7 Kettles, Keep the Car Running, My Body is a Cage, Half Light 1 & 2, Haiti, and others?Seriously man, you might as well hate on every band since the guitar's inception in music because they all use guitars instead of inventing their own instruments. What are they? Copycats?
>>34320192>>34319876Yeah. It could be worse, it could be a lot worse...pic relatedthis entire band's career
>>34320233I'm glad others feel this way
>>34320233Yes oh my gosh that album's fucking horrible
>>34319498this or this
>>34320244or thisOr I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One
>>34320241>>34320242I can put up with and dig a lot of samey bands... but Beach House is too much. Not to mention their personality is truly repulsive.
>>34320268I just hate the whole our-music-is-based-entirely-on-reverb thing. Can't stand DIIV either
>>34320303it's boring as shit too, probably worse than Tame Impala - Lonerism
>>34320257Neither are nearly as good as Summer SunMaybe Painful and maybe Electropura but not those two
>>34320303DIIV are awful too. There's a different between shoegaze and fuzzy dream pop, and complete reverb-core.>>34320332I remember a lot of people loving this band when Lonerism leaked. They're alright... nothing great but easy on the ears.
>>34320332Bonerism is acceptable to me but I also think it's the most overrated album of 2012
>>34320409No, that's still Bloom.
>>34320361To me it's boring typical psych-pop shit that you can hear when you put Sub-Pop's youtube videos on shuffle
>>34320430Oh yeah, I forgot that came out in '12I remember when Teen Dream came out and I was like okay this band can't be around much longer
>>34320361>>34320332I pretty openly gave Lonerism a chance because the production methods excited me at first, but I soon got really bored with most of the album. Apart from, like, 3 songs, it just felt like an album that pushed the bland songs into an envelope of overexaggerated distortion.>>34320141>indie rock is a genre, indie by itself isn'tI kind of hate this argument. There's not even clear characteristics of why Indie Rock is a genre, when it came off of Indie, a term that describes independent music.
>>34319286Not better, but definitely up there in my top 10 of the decade. Shame they never produced something of this tier again
>>34320447Sub-pop is definitely one of my least favorite record labels, I'll give you that.
you and i both know that isnt Lesser Matters
>>34320467Indie rock is just a scene within the alternative rock movement. People think too hard
>>34320467I have to say though, indie rock is an incredibly broad term. It can mean both independent rock music, which includes different genres like punk or a distinctive sound. When I think of indie rock as the "sound" or w/e, I always think of Eric's Trip
>>34320519I mean, I completely understand the idea of genres arising out of a particular scene like with Pop or Shoegazing, but there aren't even good characteristics and defining qualities of Indie Rock that makes it a significant genre of music. I also understand the ideas of classification and that it's a way of placing a band into a certain style, but it's ridiculous because it's become such a catch-all term for people to describe music that have a lo-fi aesthetic.>>34320575It's not wholly bad, but I can't really understand its usage or the justification with it being a legitimate genre. It's basically just Alternative Rock that has an emphasis on lo-fi tones, a wider array of instrumentation, or a link to Twee Pop.
>>34320500Yeah it's being taken over by cookie cutter "indeh" pop bands
>People hating on Bloomfuck you
>>34320620Did you see the Funny-or-Die video that basically shits on the Sub-Pop record label? It was pretty good.
>mfw I like sub-pop
>>34320637>>34320637I still really like the song "Wishes" if only for the Eric Wareheim video, but I haven't listened to Beach House since Devotion. I haven't really been interested in them for a while.
>>34320638no lol send me a link
>>34320688It's mainly a joke revolving around Postal Service's auditions, but the way they depict the Sub-Pop record executive is hilarious, because it strikes me as accurate. http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/0dadfc1070/the-postal-service-auditions
Arcade Fire is shit.
>>34319498This or KILAS, can't decide. Prolly PFNO>>34319510>implying >>34320637It's ok I like it too
>>34320686Listen to Myth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBjxOeVLY3gand On the seahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kkiJKjo2SA

>>34320848Ha, I know right. I actually really liked some of those auditions.>>34320834Myth sounds exactly like Wishes. What the hell.
>>34319968Arcade Fire EP> The Suburbs>Funeral>Neon Bible
>>34320848>>34320924holy shit there's a bunch of dudes in here
>>34320938Put Funeral on top and I agree with you.
>>34320938Couldn't be more wrongFuneral > The Suburbs > Neon Bible > s/t
>>34320938Really? You honestly think their EP and Teh Suburbz are their best works?
>>34320834FOUND YOURSELF IN A NEW DIRECTIOOOOONAEONS FAR FROM THE SUUUUNNN
Perfect from now on is their bestthat is not debatablethen comes there's nothing wrong with loveAlso Neon Bible> Funeral> The Suburbs> s/t
>>34320924oshit i didn't know Moby was in a hxc punk band before starting Moby
>>34321078But Keep it like a Secret is miles better than There's nothing wrong with love
>>34320965Well, upon reviewing the trax in my library, I have updates my inequality.Arcade Fire EP>Neon Bible>Funeral>The SuburbsHonestly thought I like them all about the same.
>>34321108I didn't know that either. I just figured he was being crazy. >>34321078I always thought that Funeral and Neon Bible were incredibly close in quality, so it's kind of hard for me to put one higher than the other. Also, Built to Spill in general is good, but I've never really understood the love for them. There are a lot of Alt-Country bands I like more.
>>34319286>my favourite album of all time
>>34321159I just kind of disdain Teh Suburbz because while there's more variety overall, I felt that they tried to make more dance tracks instead of songs with depth and a lot of work done on them, and it felt very shallow to me.
>>34321174Because it's the absolute best band to feel tohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MflvNUQi3V4>dem lyrics mang>dem feels
>>34321258Are you sure you don't disdain it because it's the most mainstream? (Seriously asking)Anyway isn't it sort of a concept album?
>plebs not mentioning Up The BracketGet on Libertines tier or get out.
>>34321320It shoved generic music down my throat that didn't really snowball its influences or try to challenge itself on any plateau. I find it uninteresting because it spanned styles without trying to compact any specific ideas under those styles.
>Simple, straight-forward rock songs with sprinkles of layering.>Usually to the effect of crescendo-core>great indie rock album of all timeI can't stand much of modern indie. It seems it's always trying to head in an epic directions, or this atmospheric, ambient bullshit. The vocals are usually the worst part.
>>34321497Well I like it. It's just chill music to listen to at work or while I'm high or whatever. Still, I sort of agree with you. That's why it was last on my list.
>>34320938Congratulations! You just won an award for edgiest post of the week!
Is BTS supposed to put a new album out this year
By the way. What have Arcade Fire been doing all this time? We haven't heard any news on a new album, or anything similar for nearly three years. Has there been any updates?
>>34322550Yeah man they're recording it with James Murphy as a producer.
