I would say that's mostly Regine. She plays an accordion, and then the hurdy gurdy and organ on Neon Bible. However you really need to take into account how string and horn-heavy both Feel Good Lost and You Forgot It In People are. I know that they've cited Broken Social Scene as an influence at least once. I'm not even calling Arcade Fire out as ripping them off or anything, but I think YFIIP really exercised that sound first, and that really brought a lot of chamber pop to Arcade Fire's music. To go from having just a violinist and cellist on tour to actually recording as full-time members, I think it makes sense.

I listened to their first three LPs and every track with few exceptions goes like this:
intro, either starting out kinda slow or starting out with a beat that will be consistent throughout the track
gets faster
harmonious vocals start about 20 seconds in
violins or whatever strings they use kick in half way into the track
150-200 beats per minute
consistently gets louder towards the last quarter of the track
vocals start shouting at the apex of the crescendo
vibraphone/glockenspiel or whatever it is doing it's thing being twee

I always thought that Funeral and Neon Bible were incredibly close in quality, so it's kind of hard for me to put one higher than the other. Also, Built to Spill in general is good, but I've never really understood the love for them. There are a lot of Alt-Country bands I like more.

I just kind of disdain Teh Suburbz because while there's more variety overall, I felt that they tried to make more dance tracks instead of songs with depth and a lot of work done on them, and it felt very shallow to me.

Are you sure you don't disdain it because it's the most mainstream? (Seriously asking)
Anyway isn't it sort of a concept album?

It shoved generic music down my throat that didn't really snowball its influences or try to challenge itself on any plateau. I find it uninteresting because it spanned styles without trying to compact any specific ideas under those styles.

>Simple, straight-forward rock songs with sprinkles of layering.

>great indie rock album of all time

I can't stand much of modern indie. It seems it's always trying to head in an epic directions, or this atmospheric, ambient bullshit. The vocals are usually the worst part.

Well I like it. It's just chill music to listen to at work or while I'm high or whatever. Still, I sort of agree with you. That's why it was last on my list.

By the way. What have Arcade Fire been doing all this time? We haven't heard any news on a new album, or anything similar for nearly three years. Has there been any updates?

Yeah man they're recording it with James Murphy as a producer.
