Mountain Goats general
guess none of you are patrician enough
I've listened to them too much the last couple of weeks.
My favorite Mountain Goats release was Black Pear Tree. I like JD better in collaboration.
>>33894860Bring Our Curses Home is a tuneMoon Colony Bloodbath is also a good collab
>>33894860>I like JD better in collaboration.I like his collaborations but I wouldn't say that I prefer them.. care to elaborate?
I want my very own Darnielle /mu/
came across this thread just as i was listening to all hail west texas againi love the mountain goats, though i prefer the lo-fi releases just because they resonated with me in the same way that lil b or tonetta's music does, just this huge catalog of personal, almost stream-of-consciousness workbut their new albums are still p good, just not the same
I love tMG but a few months ago I marathoned every single release in a couple of days and now I don't want to hear him for a good year or two.
>>33895077yfw Darnielle is not a wombat
>>33895120>implying this is possible
>>33895147>implying
>tfw can't wait for this years tour schedule to be released>tfw only thing looking forward to
>>33895152It is :(
>>33894967>Moon Colony Bloodbaththank you for reminding me to listen to this againi love you fellow mountain goats fansi hope john darnielle's touched your lives as much as he's touched mine
Anyone listen to his interview on WTF with Marc Maron? Interesting stuff, shooting up at 16 and the like.He seems pretty insecure about his age. Cheer up John, no one care you are 46.
>>33895203100%
>>33895199>tfw singing along to No Children and Love Love Love is the only thing that gets me through each year.
It was only after i listened to Color In Your Cheeks for like the 100th time that i realized it wasn't actually written about the homeless shelter where my parents worked when i was growing up but honestly it still kind of feels like it was
Did anyone else feel a really strong personal connection to Transcendental Youth. It's one of my favorite Mountain Goats albums. Someone got really mad at me last time I said that but it's true and I would consider myself a pretty big fan
>>33895293It's not my favorite but I definitely like it a lot, and the last time I mentioned it on /mu/ someone got really mad at me too. Maybe it was the same person.
can someone post the flowchart?
They suck cock
>>33895293For some reason, I really liked All Eternals Deck, so go figure. And my favorite is We Shall All Be Healed, rather than any of his earlier stuff. No way to predict these things.
>>33895283I think Love Love Love might be my favorite of his songs. I also like Up the Wolves, This Year, and Fall of the Star High School Running Back, if only for >But selling acid to your friends was a bad idea, and selling it to a cop was an even worse one.So many good songs.
>>33895328I definitely consider myself a lo-fi purist as far as the Mountain Goats goes, but I don't believe that anyone who has genuinely been moved by John's music could be angry at someone else for having been more moved by one album or another. We are all very different people
i really need a decent copy of "Collapsing Stars" from the Dilaudid EP.
>>33895283IM GONNA MAKE IT THROUGH THIS YEAR IF IT KILLS ME lol that's my fave tmg songs
Fuck you all for reminding me that Love Love Love exists and accordingly kicking me in the feels.
>>33895367is v0 decent?>>33895358>>33895343>>33895328I love you guys
>>33895220he said himself he will always be young
>>33895354LOL SELLING ACID TO A COP LOL I LOVE WHEN HE GIVES ENDS TO HIS FRIENDS AND FEELS STUPENDOUS
At recent tMG shows, people in the audience have gotten angry at fans who yell out requests. What the hell, people? If you don't want to hear people yelling requests, don't come to the tMG show. Also, more people should be yelling for From TG&Y, instead of Golden Boy.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRc9BNJmXwk
I love tMG threads, they're always the most civil threads on /mu/, unless the Transcendental Youth troll is afoot apparently haha
I love the Sunset Tree, what should I check out next? Also interested in some similar band recs
>>33895446https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5XNWFw5HVw
>>33895343All Eternals Deck drifted too far from classic Mountain Goats storytelling for me to love it.Except for High Hawk Season, I loved the fuck out of High Hawk Season.
>>33895455Tallahassee, We Shall All Be Healedor All Hail West Texas (if you're ready for lo-fi)I'm pretty sure most people here will agree with me at least that everything in the catalog is decent so you can't really go wrong
got into the shower with all my clothes on
>>33895448I get pissed when people yell for impossible shit like Golden Boy, or for obvious encore songs in the middle of the set. But otherwise, it's tradition at this point, even if he doesn't take requests too often anymore.
to be honest while i do like the lo-fi aesthetic, i kind of just want a plain bedroom style recorded album againit doesn't have to be lo-fi
>>33895341wow u suck cock
>>33895455All Hail West Texas
>>33895503Ghana is also a great place to start with lo-fi.Also, The Coroner's Gambit.
>>33895454YEAH LOL TROLLS SUCK I JUST LUV TMG
>>33895433and now that i think about it, he looks younger now than he did in 1995
>>33895514he played Golden Boy last time I saw him.. but no one yelled any requests until after he played it, figures
>>33895579>>33895433anyone else afraid that JD will die prematurely? (god forbid)
>>33895514People yelling for No Children at the beginning of the set are stupid. I have more sympathy for Golden Boy, just because it might result in a hilarious Golden Boy diatribe. But when people are shouting legitimate requests like Shower or Satanic Messiah or Ethiopians, or something else that he might have forgotten but might feel like playing, it's great, and those people are always quiet once he actually starts playing a song.
>>33895556y-you too
>>33895416v0 is perfect?
>>33895448you gotta admit some of the people that go to Mountain Goats shows are really fucking annoying...
>>33895585Huh. Well that's interesting. He didn't take a single request last time I say him, but I think it was mainly because some assholes were feeding him shots trying to get him to play that song he did for the AV Club.
my best-ever St. Patrick's Day involved drinking a bottle of Jameson with one of my friends and singing Mountain Goats songs to each other until we both broke down sobbing.they're fucking fantastic. played Day the Aliens Came the last time i saw them and i've had it stuck in my head since.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1diZciqBqxI

>>33895220Googled it, listening to it now. I've been trying to find a decent interview with him where he talks about that sort of shit. Thanks
>>33895701Thank you, kind sir.
Hijacking this thread for a random live recording request.Anybody have Dublin, 2002-10-19? Willing to trade but I dunno if I have anything super rare.
>>33895787jesus christ
>>33895787>all those bootlegsI guess I finally found a fan more obsessed than me..
do you guise prefer zopilote machine, sweden era to all hail west texas or tallahassee?I'm split either way and recognize mountian goats are 'hip and happenin as fuck'
>Sounds kind of dumb when I say it but it's true>I would do anything for you>In the cell that holds my body back the door swings wide>And I feel like someone's lost child as the guards lead me outside>And if the clouds are gathering, it's just to point the way>To an afternoon I spent with you when it rained all dayThis album makes me feel like no other album. Feels of the year every year
>>33895948they're both awesomeI generally stick to binges of one or the other but I love both in their own ways>>33895958that album is seriously GOAT
>>33895948He peaked with this, IMO.
>>33895948I like Zopilote Machine much more than Sweden, and love All Hail and Tallahassee, so I'd say I prefer the All Hail/Tall era
>>33895996I love that album to death but would not say that was peak
>>33895958Matthew 25:21 is my favorite song on that album. >And I'm an eighteen-wheeler headed down the interstate>And my breaks are going to give>And I won't know till it's too late>Tires screaming when I lose control>Try not to hurt too many people when I roll>And I am airplane tumbling wing over wing>Tried to listen to my instruments>They don't say anything>People screaming when the engines quit>I hope we're all in crash position when we hitThe songs are named after bible versus, do the actual versus appear in the songs or something else? I should look that up.
>>33895996I just love this poster
>>33895958>sounds like a bryan adams song
>>33896116some of them do. I remember when the track listing was first released I went and read all the verses.Like Psalms 40:2 is something like "he has taken me from the pit and set up on high" or something
>>33896116They're all based on the bible verse the song is named after. Basically JD applies that bible verse to a different scenario.
>>33895958fuck the feels i get from genesis 30:3
>>33896244>>33895958>>33896116Guys, guys. You've forgotten Ezekiel 7 live with Wurster being a fucking pimp.
>>33895503>Color In Your Cheeks
>felt like god's anointed when you didn't push me away
The Mountain Goats has been my favorite for years. I was heart broken when I found out his lyrics weren't based on personal experiences, though.
>>33897977you know some of them are though, right?
>>33898001I'm sure some of them are, I just wanted all of them to be.
>>33897977Why would you want any one person to feel that much pain in one lifetime?
