difficult music: wagner (you need to at least know german language, greek and medieval history, nietzsche, holderlin, the philological intellectual climate of the mid 1800s, etc to even begin to appreciate him; thats also assuming you can parse the complex melodies and pay attention hours at a time), medieval/early renaissance music (you need to know latin, church history and understand the nominalist/humanist division, have a good understanding of everything cicero ever wrote, know each church council, etc)
