If you're a plebby listener then start with Shostakovich's 7th symphony. It's the most accessible and has a bunch of recognizable Soviet anthems so you'll feel badass when you listen to it. For a more sophisticated ear, check out Shostakovich's 8th which is completely the opposite of the 7th which exposed the dichotomy between Shostakovich's own identity as a Russian yet his disapproval for the Soviet regime.
