What you seem to mean is that it's a simple fact that when a musician TRIES to remain in the top 40, they'll end up making a shallow, meaningless piece of shit as a product.

Musicians that wish to remain marketable must sacrifice innovation.

This doesn't mean that artists who sign to labels specifically designed to promote innovation and experimental styles are constrained by the same rigid, formulaic approach to music production.

I listen to music I enjoy, not because they're obscure or because they're popular. Listening to music based on the music makes more sense than listening to music based on how (un)popular the musician is. It's the same thing as listening to music to be part of the scene and not because you like the music and why so many people apparently "grew out" or metal. They never liked the music to begin with.
