Have you all heard this? It's fucking incredible.
Greenwood's compositional ability is astounding.
Excellent movie too.

Tell me one interesting coherent idea that Anderson has explored throughout the duration of a single movie other than Punch-Drunk Love. Throwing out a bunch of ambitious ideas and not seeing any of them through does not make one an ambiguous genius or a master of the surreal. It makes one half-baked and lazy.

I loved the ending to There Will Be Blood.

Also, I would normally say this is a music board, but seeing as /tv/ is probably too pleb to even talk about PT, this is fine.

I really don't understand how someone can like the ending. How does it fit with the rest of the movie? Is Anderson saying something about the conflict of faith and capital? Is he saying something about what happens when ambition comes up against an obtuse desire to rely on tradition? Civilization vs. ignorance? PLEASE SOMEONE EXPLAIN HOW THAT ENDING DOESN'T SUCK.

What is the climax? What is Anderson saying? It seems deliberately opaque with very little purpose.

You're not arguing very well. You first said that PTA sucks because he can't keep coherence. I said that equating good filmmaking with coherence is ridiculously stupid, and you shoot back with this "pretty pictures and good performaces" bullshit?

Name a Fellini film that wraps up all the themes with a tight little bow. Films/storytelling that is coherent is a product of the american cinema, as is this strange idea that film (as with NOTHING else in life) needs to be tidily done.

I would say La Dolce Vita does exactly that. Also, having a coherent idea does in no way imply that the film itself must be coherent in terms of plot. Does Mulholland Dr. not convey a deliberate idea and have an actual purpose?

The issue with Blood is that it deliberately positions itself as a movie that is rich with allegories and ideas about religion etc but ultimately it doesn't offer any of the ideas that it suggests it holds. I find it cold and dull.

I don't hate it. I saw it 6 times in theaters because I was so confused by it. It's a movie that I think is almost technically perfect but has almost no heart. I feel absolutely no connection to the movie and it's not one that draws me into its world at all. Aside from a few staggering sequences I think it's an interesting stylistic departure for PTA but not one that produced a very watchable movie.
