I don't believe so. In fact, their music is even absolutely not just black metal.

I don't think Deafheaven really take themselves to be a black metal band in the first place. In interviews they make it very clear that they're influenced by a lot of black metal, but their influences also include a lot of shoegaze and post-punk. Of course they're not gonna dress up in corpse paint, it wouldn't fit their music at all and they are probably very aware of that.

I'm glad it looks like it can be for fairly normal looking people. It made sense to look like that in the late 80's/90's, because that's when it was really emerging and and it was all about being as extreme as possible. It's not about live performance, it's about how the message comes across. So, I mean you can have stage theatrics to pull that live performance, or really intense energy from the band. Listen to the album and see if you are moved in someway, and just forget about everything visual. Let your mind do the scenery for you.

Good point. Well in that case I think it's about if preference. For me if you go for the theatrics then you will be entertained for sure, but if you got to something pictured where it's standing room only, small, the band is playing loud, the singer is really into it then you will get a sort of energy, maybe more primal than just that "I am here watching good theatrics." Then again it has nothing to do with generalizations. A good theatrical band like the ones you enjoy could give just the same energy, and moving performance as a band pictured to someone who is more moved by that sort of scene.

I don't really mind what a band looks like, or personas really. I like more crust black metal, and depressive black metal these days than anything so it's more about the band performing the songs than anything else.

Of course it does. The black metal scene was essentially a reaction to the death metal scene becoming big, becoming popular and "selling out". The second wave was basically all about misanthropy, and in the end that is what I feel that black metal is and should be about. Even if it's about love for nature or whatever, there will always be a certain hatred for mankind in black metal.

But I take black metal a lot more serious than a lot of the people on this board so meh, it's really hard to compare our views on it.

I doubt it but I wouldn't mind it at all. Most of the people I know who are into black metal are in it for the image and if they try to describe a band to me they start with how they look. Then the lyrics. It will probably happen eventually as the style gets more hip.

But image seems to be a big part of the genre. Image is a part if any genre and a lot of black metal thrived on how visual it is. Some bands have a cool image and theme, some are stupid and some are just silly. I only let Immortal get away with it because I honestly cannot tell if they are serious or not.
