How can you tell if a pair of headphone is better than another?

I have a $60 headset, and just bought /mu/-approved $150 headphones. They both sound exactly alike when I compare a few 320kbps and FLAC songs. What gives?

you must have some pretty insanely dull ears

no two pairs really sound the same, esp in that difference of pricerange

The cheap pair is a 'Razor' headset, the other are AKG248.

Maybe your ears will develop and become more sensitive quality if you've never had decent audio equipment but I would say those should sound radically different. Most headphones even of a comparable price range are unique and distinguishable sonically.

this and

>>27628320
how common are they? closed or open? maybe coincidentally the bass and treble have similar settings, use an amp and I'm sure you will notice differences when dickin around

also, never buy headphones solely by recommendation, just walk straight into an audio shop and try as many headphones as possible, because it's highly subjective

There is a small difference. I hear more midrange. Maybe a little too much.

>>27628483
I don't know. Closed, I guess.

>just walk straight into an audio shop
I don't go outside. What's an audio shop? I've never seen one of those in my life.

>>27628502
specific example?
I've got a pair right here and a little time before class. I'll be honest if it sounds bad.

>> No.27628593

>>27628529
it's easy to differ, closed headphones are surrounded by a solid shell (-> big bass, problem: sweaty), while open headphones have a few holes for sound pressure to get out of the shell (-> "lighter" sound, but unsuitable for outside since you hear every sound your environment produced, and everyone listenes to your music as well lel)

>I don't go outside. What's an audio shop? I've never seen one of those in my life.
I just used audio shop as a bad substitute for a word I don't know in english

I thnk hi-fi store is the accurate term, or even an electronics market can have a good compilation of headphones

It won't sound bad but there's no way you'll get the deep sub bass you need to appreciate recordings like the TNGHT EP, Andy Stott, etc

What device are you using them on? You usually need a soundcard to really notice differences (especially with laptops). Could be bad rips or the stuff you're listening to was not well produced.

>>27628729
I bought a pair of ATH-M50s about 2 months ago and I highly recommend them. Amazon is selling them for pretty cheap also.

that's a key point. let them burn in. many headphones keep improving for weeks and months until they reach their real sound

>> No.27628907

>>27628767

I concur. I've had a pair for about a year now and they just sound better and better, heavy on bass but just fine all round too. Likely the best headphones in their price range.

Solid build as well, the only problem I'm just starting to encounter now is that the pleather ear pads are starting to deteriorate, but I'm gonna get some nice velour on these puppies.

Apparently they can be modded quite easily to improve the sound too :)
