So /mu/, here's the problem. I used to listen to my dad's vinyl version of this album when I was a teenager, and I loved it. But the vocals added on the remixed CD version simply ruined it for me.

Is there any way to get the unmodified version of this album?

Download a vinyl rip of it.

Most of it, at least those tracks that were changed on CD can be found in their original form on Leather.

Frank Zappa's Sleep Dirt. It was purely instrumental. It was later remixed for the CD version with vocals added.

No dude. Go to what.cd and download the vinyl rip for it.

well shit.

I have a copy but it's in FLAC.

maybe I can upload in V0, may take a while.
or are you okay with Q.6 .m4a settings, OP?

if it's 16/44, split it in two, i'm fine with that
i want this too

if not i'll hold out for v0

I don't think OP even knows what that means. But I'd really like this. It beats my current 128 kpbs version.

Is there really an instrumental version of this album out there, or is op just mistaken?

>> No.27473444

>>27473392
Yeah it is. It's the original mix, then Zappa "corrected" it with adding vocals to "Hutchentoot" opera parts and added drums on almost every song.

Some really hate the CD and only listen to vinyl. I heard CD first, so I'm not that affected by the vocals and drums.

>> No.27473472

the original vinyl release was instrumental
in the 80s Zappa remixed practically all of his shit, and he added vox to Sleep Dirt

the original release was in fact instrumental.

Zappa supposedly wanted the vocals in on the original release but couldn't due to contractual or time issues, can't recall.

If I understand correctly Zappa wanted to get out of WB contract with Leather which would be a 8 sided vinyl release that would technically get him out of the contract. (I guess he had to do 4 more albums). But WB didn't like that solution, so they broken it down to 4 albums: Sleep Dirt, Studio Tan, Orchestral Favourites and Zappa in New York (I think).
And yes he wanted to do the vocals from the beginning because that was his space opera / musical called Hutchentoot or something similar, but that never got anywhere further than just what you get on Sleep Dirt CD.

if it was going to be anything similar to Thing-FIsh, we may have dodged a bullet.

You know Thing-Fish kind of grew on me. I couldn't finish it for the first couple of times. I just couldn't.
But then I started to give more attention to music than lyrics and I realised that Thing->Fish is fucking incredible as a early "electronic" album. And while the humour in Thing-Fish is mostly gross-out there are few things I actually like about it.

I for one enjoy the way the mammy nuns talk.

>>27473813
He so gay is fucking amazing.

>> No.27473996

>>27473883
well to be fair, I only listened to it, like twice.
I think my issue was that I heard some of those songs before, only that the mammy nuns talked over it now.

I agree though, He's So Gay might be his best song of that era.

yeah, not really haha.

Well I actually prefer the Thin-Fish version of most songs from You Are What You Is.

And if you really listen to the music it is a good ambient album. I would even dare say it, that it's probably one of Zappa's best synclavier albums, provided that I haven't heard Civilization: Phase III.

oh boy, get one that.
for one, the timbres and sounds on the Synclavier sound a hell of a lot better.
Hell, I think Zappa even had an ambient track on there too with Tibetan throat singers.

and I'll give Thing-Fish another try, why the hell nawt?

I will. I was working my way through Zappa's discography, but stopped right at Civilization: Phase III, when I realised my discography isn't complete. I never got around to rip those CDs that I own and search for those that I don't. So I never finished listening to his Discography.
I was listening it to make a complete flowchart guide to entire Frank Zappa discography. Pic related.

Well I also downloaded a torrent named Frank Zappa discography, which had some pretty cool bootlegs, but wasn't his entire discography. I do have a large amount of original CDs and some that are on CD-R, but those that I don't have on either are in mp3, fro previously mentioned discography torrent. Only thing that bothers me is, that most of those rips are really bad. Almost none V0 (my preferred format), and are mostly aroun 128 and 256 kpbs.

Also I do thank you for the input on the flowchart, it did help me order his albums in a better way. Hopefully I'll finish this flowchart soon.
