Sup /mu/? /v/ here, just wanted to know your opinion on vidya soundtracks like the one from.. Bastion:http://youtu.be/xzGEiER7mkcBioshock:http://youtu.be/g2JGsNnbxZAPortal:http://youtu.be/oCZlpr8tdaIDead Island:http://youtu.be/9CzcOcBb_ms
I watch my brother play a couple of hours of Bastion when it first came out. Fast forward a couple months... a friend of mine just gave me the Bastion soundtrack. This thing is amazing.I have the Portal soundtrack too, but I'm not really digging it unless I'm playing the game. There are some really good tracks in the World of Goo game. Let me pick one out.
>>26221939World of Goo:Best of Times:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0tbDIsmx_cBeautiful. Just beautiful.Red Carpet Extend-o-matic:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku4eLhgsEE0Pretty terrible, but has a funny story.>Note from Kyle himself:"I wrote this in 2001 as a joke for a music class in undergrad. Only the beginning of this song is used in the game, and for only one level, but it has become one of the most requested pieces of music. So, here's the "full song", but it comes with a warning - this song is designed to sound like every cheap 90's dance song ever made. The singer is great though, an astrophysicist named Jessica. I gave a her a chainsaw for her wedding and we never spoke again. The end."lel.
>>26221995>This song is so epic, it makes me want to do something epic.>Like write a book.
Bastion was such a beautiful game. Why aren't there many games from major developers that are as simply beautiful as some indie games?Anyway, Knytt and Knytt Stories had a really beautiful, minimal ambient soundtrack from what I recall.
I really can't believe the quality of the music in Bastion. It really is amazing.>>26222042I know, right?
>>26222101Because those aren't guaranteed to sell like another brown/gray bloomy modern military shooter with guns that sound like automatic staplers.

There is literally nothing prohibiting videogames fron being an expressive medium, but most art-house videogames gain zero traction within mainstream gaming circles, even among the so called proponents of games as an art form.

>>26223028That's right, keep telling yourself that you 'enjoy' your videogames and that you're not wasting your life.
>>26223028You're confused, the entertainment here is that I can discuss music here when I'm not practicing or listening to it. I can't do that if fat /v/irgins who know nothing about art take over the board with their awful video game threads.

I seem to remember the music in Animal Crossing being particularly great (the late night bits were especially serene), but it would appear that I am most grievously without a choice song to pluck out! I looked up the 12 AM song on YouTube and it was not quite what I looking for, and after my hard drive crashed, I am without a quick way of checking the music. >>26223470Smoking cigarettes makes people happy, does that mean they should be smoking? No, same thing with video games. You're wasting your time playing them and are too addicted to the quick sense of reward it gives you that you continue playing them. You shirk you responsibilities, a casual glance at /v/ would give you a sense of all the maladjusted people video games create.
>>26223432I agree with this one, and I have a place in my heart for Morrowind.Video game music can be awesome when it has its own vibe, but when it's trying to cop film music and shit, it falls short. When it tries to imitate album music like what Bastion and Portal did, it's fucking cheese, except to the people who are impressed by the fact it's video game music.
>>26223532>tries to imitate album music like what Bastion and Portal didWhy aren't video games allowed to have good music?
>>26223567They don't have good music.
>>26223580>>26223058In the time you've spent saging this thread, how much other music discussion have you accomplished?
>>26223567Bastion sounds like someone loaded up FL Studio for the first time, and decided to imitate DJ Shadow with some loops of a guy doing cliche licks on an acoustic guitar. No album based on hip hop would make the cut, if it was the quality of that soundtrack.Same with Portal, replace DJ Shadow with Squarepusher and hip hop for breakcore. Both soundtracks, removed from the rose tint of being a video game soundtrack, are bland as fuck and completely un-noteworthy.
>>26223488Well, you know, he asked "why stop doing something if it's fun?"That doesn't mean everything he does is for fun, just some things.I don't see the problem in that.It would be a problem if he wasn't "giving up fun" on something more important, which is not the same thing.
>>26223633>Tripfag>Thinks his stupid opinion matterslol

>>26223649>Hating tripcode users on /mu/That's the first sign of someone from /v/, tripcode users have always been a distinctive trait of the board. Dismissing his well thought out post simply because he is using a name and tripcode is incredibly silly.
>>26223649If this is your first time on /mu/, please note that unlike as is the case on other boards tripfags are generally not reviled and generally not ment with hostility. On the contrary, /mu/ celebrates its tripfags on account of they are, with a few exceptions, all fairly nice posters.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-VKfbZKeq0
>>26223643>That doesn't mean everything he does is for funThat's not the point of contention, though. It's that anything he does is defensible by saying "it's fun." Are there any games with acid house soundtracks? Any games you would describe as psychedelic? Today, after I heard about a game called "Jungle Speed" (which turned out to be a card game completely unworthy or note) I am began envisioning a frenetic game with an art style similar to the movie Yellow Submarine, featuring a pulsating Acid House soundtrack, but perhaps I shouldn't I'd such a thing already exists.
