I like late 80s&90s DM and Thrash when it's done right. Current DM is usually pretty terrible. Cannibal Corpse is shit, but fun to listen to sometimes.
When done well, it can be fantastic and mature (Ulcerate, Mitochondrion, Isomnium etc). When not done well, it can be immature, tryhard and over the top (>implying you can't think of loads of examples).

figured i'd give it an honest listen, found an "essentials" list. i found some parts appealing but the constant shitty metronome double bass makes it almost unlistenable and the majority of lyrics i read sounded like parodies of death metal and not actual staples of the genre.i'll stick with eyehategod.

>>25951674Loads do disregard them, but I don't. In fact, I find DM lyrics one of the most important facets of the genre. Some are comical, some are genuinely thought provoking, some read like a B horror flick. Not to mention like you said, they put a lot of work into training their vocals, writing lyrics (often with rhythms and time signatures equally complex as the instruments), and recording. In general, if an album has lyrics, they should be worth listening to for some reason.

I'm usually an OSDM guy, specifically Swedish bands like Dismember and Necrophobic, but I'm discovered some cool modern death metal bands too, like Beyond Creation and Obscura. A little bit too clean and at times wanky, but cool nonetheless.
