Going through Tanya Donelly works has taken me back to The Breeders, the band which is most known for Last Splash, an objectively bad album.
If I'm remembering right, Tanya and Kim Deal made this band because both wanted more freedom than they were getting in their current bands (Throwing Muses and Pixies respectively). Unfortunately for Tanya all of the tracks were written by Kim (with the exception of Only In 3's which was co-written) and the album's sound appears to be dominated by Kim's influence. Listening to this it's not a surprise that Tanya would go on to leave the band after this album to create Belly.
To explain the sound, it's very Pixies-esque, with the songwriting approach of Bossanova and the grittiness of Surfer Rosa. I wasn't able to pick out any highlights on my first listen, but I think that's due to the consistent nature of the album. As I find out which tracks I prefer over others, that's when I think this album will grow on me more.
