That was the "inconvenient" part. I dunno how bad it is compared to competing open ear headphones, but you can hear it well enough while there on someone else's head.
And just my 2 cents, but unless you're out buying multiple headphones to compliment the nuances of the music you plan on listening to it with, I don't think it's that big of a deal. There's never been an album I've listened to with the Grado's that I said "Gee, I sure do wish I had a bit more X with these things".
