Sufjan writes lyrics some people relate to with melodies that are comfy. It isn't for me because I think it sounds monotonous, but this hate is overblown. Live and let live. Trying to put quantitative or objective measures on a form of art/expression is an act of futility. Some people are going to connect with different things than you based on their experiences and what appeals to them. Just the way it is.
