Because traditional (western) music only covers a small fraction of the range of sounds, timbres and frequencies we can hear and can be used in composition. It's like a painter only using one or two hues out of the entire visible spectrum. Sure, they might make some amazing paintings, but there's so much more that isn't being used.

No one is saying anyone HAS to listen to it. If it doesn't jive with you, then cool, whatever, no one really cares.

I personally enjoy it for other, social commentary reasons, I guess you could say. Noise is pretty much the new Punk. It has absolutely no regards for societal norms, and I think a lot of Noise/Noise Rock artists embrace the genre for this reason. Sure there's plenty of shit out there that has absolutely no thought behind it, but I truly think Noise can be a form of music and art, just the same way someone could enjoy a Rothko painting.

I'd recommend starting with The Great Annihilator and/or Children of God to get the best overall sense of "pre-breakup Swans". Both are great albums in their own right while also being approachable for first time listeners.

Personally, I would advise against starting with The Seer or To Be Kind in this situation. Not because they're bad albums (both are awesome, they've got some of my favorite Swans tracks on them), but the length of the albums, and slow building walls of sound that keep building and building with repetition can be tough to dedicate the time and attention to upon first listen.

Soundtracks for the Blind is completely worth the two and a half hour listen. It's honestly it's own beast and doesn't really sit quite in the "pre-breakup sound" camp, and not quite "post-breakup" either. I'd wait to listen to this one after you've decided you're liking what you hearing with Swans' other material.
