The second symphonic piece titled Echo d'Orphée starts off similarly with a percussive intro. It is followed by numerous musical intermissions that try to surprise you as much as they can. There is a huge spectrum of sounds here. The following movement titled the Sarcastic Clavecine is truly a masterwork of sound. It sounds like a void. The following track Eurydice is this really low-pitched vocal sample that reminded me of Tobacco (L O L). It is surrounded by other voices saying “Eurydice”. The next track is a harp/violin duet. While I am almost 100% sure this was not intended at all, they sound as though they were performing in a single instance. The next movement is 2 jazz pieces played at the same time with a dark ambient hollow drone in the back. Some crazy ass vocals enter the picture as well. Movement 6 Le biguinage is oriented on a woodwind performance with scratches and bangs in the background while there is a backwards (?) piano in the back as well. It all sounds so surreal, reminds me off some pre-war films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Further on Schaeffer’s tape manipulation seems to be venturing into proto-dark ambient with the tape loops having a very hollow sense to them on the 7th movement. The 9th movement is some twisted shit. A heavy breath, some piano crashes and crashes in general. The tenth has some beautiful violin/female singing pairing. The weird thing is that the singing seems to vary from normal to manipulated. The closer Grand Air is a surprisingly coherent in terms of structure but not in terms of the orchestration. It ends quiet abruptly. An abrupt end to an abrupt symphony.
