And then today's album, Drinking Songs by Matt Elliott.
The only reason this album ended up in my backlog was because I thought the album cover was hella rad. Was going to have Wednesdays as my "great album covers from my backlog-day" but could only find two really good ones (this and Ceres & Calypso).
Anyways this album took me completely by surprise. I was expecting something dark and melancholic, but heading home from work in the dark night with this album and rain drops on my head was really something else.
Drinking Songs is some experimental/avant-garde folk album which relies completely on its atmosphere which it completely nails. It sounds like a soundtrack to Crime & Punishment, and this is something really good.
My only real complaint is that it can get a bit too long winded, and some tracks felt like they could have been shorted down quite a bit. The closer is also not what I had wished for. It's a really cool closing track, at 20 minutes with a freaking drum and bass beat, with samples and everything. It works as the albums crescendo, going out with a bang and all that, but I just wish that it would bring me down on the ground sometime after building, and take me full circle into the dark and eerie atmosphere that this album carries.
I'm still going high with this album though, a weak nine, and a blue tag. This is definitely something I can see myself coming back to a lot in the future, and it might be my definitive album for the long ride with the night bus home after a night of drinking.
