I'll toss you a reply
When I first came here back in high school I think, I thought everyone was a pretentious fuck. They definitely were, and arguably that was the best because they chased out a lot of people who probably didn't belong. Not the same case anymore.
I didn't start seriously browsing /mu/ until I believe late 2012, I believe my senior year of high school. (Le underaged face) The core of my taste was mainly ska, dadrock, and jazz. So I largely hated a lot of things, but math rock and midwestern emo were something that I initially started with before coming to /mu/, so it was easy to expand my taste in that area.
The first new thing I explored was shoegaze. The first time I listened to Loveless, I was like "What the fuck is this shit?" So I never really came back to it and just kept dabbling in the "safe" genres. There was a time later though that Loveless just clicked for me and it is now my favorite album. "getting" Loveless made me dive more into genres I wasn't really used to, and so I would just download things from Sharethreads (because they used to be just that, but turned into request threads over the past two years) and I just saw my taste expand.
It kinda negatively affected my personality back in high school, because I gained this arrogance and pretentiousness that I didn't start shaking until recently, but I just have such a deeper love and understanding for music. I actually don't understand how so many people don't enjoy exploring and understanding new things.
The tradeoff is that I don't really know any people who share music in the way I do, so it is a bummer. I dated a girl that had A+ taste but she cheated on me, so that sucks. But I live in a small town so that's why prob
I don't know man, /mu/ is just like any other board on 4chan. Great discussion if you can get past the shitposting, although since /pol/ and /r9k/ are leaking, shitposting is at an all time high. Just be smart, dont' respond to b8
Good luck m80
