Frank Zappa is one of the most overrated musicians in history. His music is devoid of any emotional investment or passion. Trivial, soulless demonstration of a wide range of influences and a high level of musicianship, neither of which are indicative of the ability to create good or meaningful music.
I have never met a Zappa fan who is not a pretentious asshole who uses Zappa's music as a platform to stand on as an appreciator of "highbrow" or "experimental" music. I've never had a discussion with a Zappa fan where they actually talked about the textures and tones explored in his music, all they ever do is talk about how genius and great he is, usually with a string of his quotes and witticisms, which are probably the only intellectually stimulating thing he has ever contributed.
I honestly think Frank Zappa should have just been a stand-up comedian or a humorist and not pretended to know how to make music just because he studied it a bunch.
