I'm calling you snobby assholes out.
You know that 90% of albums by your supreme leaders are prattling bullshit that serves only to pad out full-length albums and that the "obscure" lyrics don't mean anything!
Queen, David Bowie, Genesis, Rush, it's all shit that pads out two decent songs per album.
I have plenty of songs from each artist.
The way I collected these songs, most of which were never singles, is I listened to the entire discographies and slowly after I listened to each song FIVE TIMES I deleted any songs that were obnoxious, dragged on without point, and left no impression. So don't tell me "You're not listening to it in the context of the album" and "You just want the poppy radio hits". It was a process of elimination.
The reason I bring this up is my recent encounter with a Rush head. He had a motorcycle that was decorated black and red with the Starman on it. So I brought up his interest in the band and said I'd only kept about 5 songs but that I'd listened to them all at least a few times and he said I was missing out on so much.
He immediately threw on some looooooong and droning track from Hemispheres and went on explaining to me why it was significant and symbolic and why I wasn't seeing all that's there, while outlining the "underlying meaning" of each word as if it were the Da Vinci Code of stoner albums.
I know about deeper meaning and lyrics that have clever double-meanings, but what he was pointing out was the bar-napkin scribbling that Geddy had to interpret a night after a long LSD trip. If you ask Lee himself, I doubt he'd be able to superimpose any meaning onto the lyrics, but just like Beatles fans, there are millions of condescending artistés that believe their every word is handed down from god and hold the secrets of the universe.
Side-note, Game Without Frontiers sucks. Stop trying to be so symbolic and metaphoric. I hate when people bring it up when talking about Genesis/Gabriel.
