Not liking Animal Collective is contrarian only to drug addled 20-something hipsters who have no idea what 'aesthetic judgement' is, and think 'high art' is the hackneyed atrocities posted on /r/art (pic related, this deviantart tier eyesore which is probably liked by you).
There's nothing contrarian about not liking /mu/core, any legitimate music critic (not the jokingly titled "music reviewers" you are probably familiar with) would be laughed out of academia and end up killing themselves if they even admitted to liking something as terrible as any of the albums on the /mu/ essentials charts with the exception of "muh two pitchfork approved jazz albums".
If you think it's contrarian not to like /mu/core, or even to despise it, you've probably never talked to anyone with an actual education in music.
