Jim O'Rourke + Sonic Youth
this is a fucking wild, out-there EP. it starts in a drone of varying density and layers, with a squeaky, intermittent free jazz element. from there, we are led into a calmer section, with jazzy cymbals and sonic youth's singer. from there, we descend into pure fucking wild music expression. twanging guitars, distant voices, electronic blips. and then we are led down a ladder, into an area of straining instruments, as if the sounds being coaxed from them are their death rattles. reminiscent of jackie-o motherfucker, or even some of the darker moments in the beatles' instrumentation. then we are eased out of this pit we descended, slowly, but the memory of whatever was down there lingers. a muffled speaking can be heard.
this EP, though a fascinating listen, is not quite right for me. I find music of this complexity, and bizarre nature, very difficult to warm to on a personal level. I give it a 6.5, though it almost certainly warrants a higher score. I can't see myself revisiting it, but it was an experience. perhaps a one-and-done deal. I find sonic youth's singer to have a very drab, disengaging voice as well.
