basically, when you play a note on a guitar, piano, violin or whatever; what you hear is made up of the fundamental note and its overtones.
the fundimental is the not that you would associate with the pitch. ie: when i play an A4 (the A above middle C) i will get a 440 Hz note, and some overtones.

different instruments highlight more or less of their overtones, but technically they all have overtones.
older les pauls dont actually have more overtones they have less, giving them a smoother mellowed sound, whereas cheaper guitars with bad wood and hard lacquer have sharper overtones giving a more peircing sound, which is generally unfavourable.

if you look at the pick then you can see the fundamental and its overtones, they go on forever getting smaller and smaller because they are getting quiter and quiter.
