The O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack is Old-Time
I'd reccomend you check out the basics of old-time, Dock Boggs, Charlie Poole, Roscoe Holcomb, and, if you'd like a more recent artist, Frank Fairfield.
Also check out pic related, it's a four hour collection of folk, old time, and blues that's a great introduction to Americana, there's a MEGA link in the archives.

Tribute albums aside, this is a very very strong contender. Although I prefer the OP, personally.

Not him, but I think the Anthology of American Folk Music is an alright place to start. (There's a working link for it somewhere in the archive)
I'd like to help you more, but I'm only just getting into American Folk myself.

I'm really not sure what it is about it. There's a lot of goofy ass songs I always skip but Henry Lee and Fatal Flower Garden destroyed me the first time I listened to it. Kind of fucked me up for a while. I was coming out of an addiction and it hit me at the right time.

Released in 1952, recorded 1926-1933.

Essential VA-core I think comes down to Nugges, No New York, and pic related.

Maybe Loud Fast & Out of Control and OHM too but they're a little more niche.
