Anybody else ever listened to an album so religiously that you start to make up stories and characters inspired by the album?
For me it's pic related.
>three black brothers growing up in the ghetto
The youngest and the main character (Miles) is a Will Hunting-type kid, a genius full of ideas but a little naive and idealistic.
The second oldest (Cannonball) is the cheerful one, the optimistic brother in the group
The oldest (Coltrane) is the wisest, not as cheerful as Cannonball but much more calm and composed. He is the mentor to his brothers, though his intelligence can't match that of Miles. He's Miles' Ben Affleck.
Kind of Blue is a story of Miles' adolescence in the Ghetto, where injustice against him and his community wears down his innocence and idealism. As the album progresses, Miles experiences a taste of adulthood in the most painful way possible, growing cynical (and maybe more racist?) little by little.
Cannonball is the character who teaches Miles the finer things in life, the positive side to life that can otherwise be miserable. Life can be hard, he teaches, but you shouldn't focus on the ugly things if you want to be happy.
Coltrane is different, though. He understands perfectly what Miles is going through, for he had been there as well. He fully acknowledges that life in the ghetto indeed sucks, and it is hard to be optimistic all the time in circumstances such as this one. However, what he teaches to Miles, and one that resonates within our main character at the end of the album, is that he has to keep on living with hope, because giving up is not an option.
His brothers and other experiences and characters (I'm thinking a white kid as old as Miles (Evans) that teaches Miles about friendship beyond skin color) ultimately help Miles to grow as a more mature and intelligent person that will perhaps one day live beyond the walls of the ghetto.
