I remember not so long ago having a conversation with a good friend of mine about jazz. said friend is moderately interested in music, and not particularly in jazz. One of the reasons for that is that, to him, a lot of it feels too safe or focused on sounding soft on the ear. That is an understandable point of view to some extend.
And today's album, Flute-In by Bobbi Humphrey, is probably the kind of thing a person saying this has in mind while advancing this argument.
This album is everything but bad, but certainly isn't that good either. This album pretty much fits the cliché of easy-listening jazz that seems to hve more to offer than it seems at first, but does not exctly stand a more careful inspection either.
Surely all the performance (starting with Humphrey's flute) are good, all the musicians can play together well, but nothing really shines through. All the compositions are nice, pleasent and sweet but none is truely memorable through let's say some immersion or some virtuosity.
It is a nice listen as long as you do not pay too much attention.
