This is less true every year. Finding new and alternative music on the internet has become easier, faster, and cheaper than ever. It's much easier for an artist to become a massive sensation with zero radio play and no music videos. References to relatively obscure bands and films in mainstream movies and shows are relatively commonplace. Pop has gotten weird. TV has gotten weird. Cartoons have gotten weird. Obviously there is still a dominant mainstream culture as there always will be, but all the time the selection is opening up.
