Ulver - Bergtatt
I liked this a lot. I'd say it's raised my view on folk metal (some albums in my other calendar had lowered it!) but the black metal elements I thought were pretty standard. I liked how the vocals dictated the flow of the album, turning harsh as the pace quickens and then going clean for the prettier sections. The folk parts were definitely my favourite parts; they had charm, ambience and patience with lots of melodic goodness that even rubbed off onto the more abrasive passages slightly. The instrumental breaks were quite beautiful and really thickened the atmosphere; the black metal sounded quite akin to other black metal bands from that period, a good means of foundation for a new genre blend but still a little bit too blueprint. That aside, very pleasing full package.
