Do albums really 'click' after tons of listens? I will always see in reviews for albums such as Faust, Trout Mask Replica, Spiderland, or similar albums that 'I used to hate this. It's so difficult, I didn't even start to like it until my 8th listen!'
I kind of call bullshit on this. When it comes to albums, I'm pretty sure that if you don't 'get' it by the third listen, you won't get it at that point in your life. For example, Faust confused me on my first listen- it was my introduction to krautrock, one of my first experimental rock albums, and I basically just found it on AllMusic one time while surfing the web. But after listening to a lot of Can, giving it a bit of time, and listening to weirder music, I gave Faust my second listen and LOVED it. Basically the same with Trout Mask Replica- first listen was intriguing, but confusing. Gave it a bit of time, listened to more music, went back for a second listen, and now I really fucking enjoy it.
Does anybody else tend to get albums on two or three listens? Do you doubt those who say it takes 8? Does it take you 8? Whatever you wanna say about it
