ITT: Albums that should have been great but...
for dodgy production?
- Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA. A lot of tracks where ruined here, how about that drumming?
- Most of Hüsker Dü's releases, unfortunately. I still think their music is great, but it seems like it could have been so much better with a decent engineer. Steven Fjelstad left that same mark on most albums he did the engineering on.
- I also always hated how Nirvana's Nevermind was produced. I never felt that a polished production style benefited the group, and it certainly seems to clash with their sound. Ever seen "Smells Like Teen Spirit" live? It's so raw and amazing, the slick album version pales in comparison. In part because of this, I think that In Utero and the two live albums are much better. (I also think In Utero has better songwriting, but that's another thread I guess.)
