Suite pour 14 instruments is the following piece that features Schaeffer combining numerous orchestral tapes with others, making it sound a little bit surreal. It falls very neatly together even though you can easily spot the locations of the tape manipulations. The prelude is mostly string-based. Courante- Roucante features woodwinds and a piano. It ends on a dissonant string pizzicato section supported by woodwinds. Rigodon announces itself with a drum roll. Once again this damn bell! It’s freaky. It reminds me of Raymond Scott’s Manhattan Research project at times but it predates it apparently. The suite closer is pretty long compared to the previous pieces, lasting 4 min. It starts off with a low piano notes and follows with a set of strings/woodwinds that sometimes come in out of nowhere. At times the 2 different tapes are played one by one, making it sort of a tricky composition. The way the strings are fading in and out just sounds so spectacular, I don’t know why. The closer on here is a bird singing section manipulated in a way that it sounds like an orchestral composition. Damn.
I am very excited for the next 3 volumes, this shit is amazing. I’ll rate this thing as a whole in the end.
