Based is a word to describe staying true to yourself and all your emotions, good or bad that you deal with on an everyday basis as a human being, and embracing it. All humans experience moments of gluttony, bad choices, sex, drugs, alcohol which Based hip hop includes, but it also delves deeper into other things that define us as humans. Pain, joy, love, hope and anger etc. What differentiates Based hip hop from Commercial (another form), is that much like human nature it alternates constantly from superficial lighthearted songs about women/drink/money to more introspective songs that like poetry, make us look at ourselves and our life and recognize the variety of emotions, good or bad, we are lucky to feel as humans through verse. While commercial hip hop, alot like Mcdonald’s, is a quick fix that satisfies our animalistic enjoyment of women drugs and alcohol, and doesn’t touch on the other side of human nature, thought and emotion. The thing poetry and Based hiphop both use to remind us how special we are as humans, to feel. In summation, I will say that much like Shakespeare alternated between silly comedies and heart wrenching tragedies to explain human nature and drama, Based hip hop does the same.
